Sweden Triumphs Over Argentina To Set Up USA Last-16 Clash

Sweden continued their impressive run at the Women's World Cup, securing a perfect record of three wins from three matches in Group G.

Their latest victory, a 2-0 result against Argentina in Hamilton, guarantees them the top spot in the group and sets up an enticing last-16 encounter with the USA.

With their superior goal difference essentially sealing the top position, Sweden made nine changes to their starting lineup in Hamilton. Despite lacking the same level of cohesion displayed in their previous games, Sweden proved to be too strong for their Argentine opponents.

The match remained fiercely contested for an hour until Sweden's superior quality came to the fore. Rebecka Blomqvist found the space she needed in the box to convert Sofia Jakobsson's cross from close range, putting Sweden in the lead.

Late in the game, Elin Rubensson calmly converted a penalty after Blomqvist was fouled in the box while Argentina was attempting to defend a free-kick. This second goal sealed the result, making it a 2-0 victory for Sweden.

Argentina's journey in the tournament ends with a last-place finish in the group, having earned only one point. Although they put up a valiant effort against Sweden, they were unable to break through their opponent's defense and achieve a historic milestone of winning a maiden match and progressing to the knockout rounds in a World Cup finals.

In the same group, South Africa secured their spot in the last 16 with a thrilling 3-2 triumph over Italy in a dramatic encounter in Wellington.

The stage is now set for Sweden and South Africa to compete in the knockout stages, promising further excitement and exhilarating matches in the Women's World Cup.

Poland Through To The World Cup After 2-0 Win Over Sweden In Final Playoff

Poland secured their slot at the World Cup in Qatar after Robert Lewandowski and Piotr Zielinski's goals gave them a play-off final win over Sweden.

Lewandowski opened the scoring early in the second half after slotting home a penalty after a foul on Grzegorz Krychowiak.

Zielinski claimed the second after the Napoli man took advantage of a defensive lapse to run clear and settle the tie in favour of the home side.

Poland will be heading to Qatar after a hard-fought victory over a Sweden side that played a huge part in denying them a place in the knockout stages of Euro 2020.

The win was achieved with a number of players carrying injuries too, according to Lewandowski.

"We had many problems before this match," he said. "A lot of our players were injured, including me - I had a problem with my knee.

"We suffered, but now we can celebrate. I am proud and happy."

The result was a disappointing one for Sweden who had been the better side and spurned the best chance of the first half when Emil Forsberg shot too close to keeper Wojciech Szczesny who saved.

The visitors rallied after falling behind, with Forsberg again testing Szczesny, but saw the tie slip away from them when Marcus Danielson's poor control at the back allowed Zielinski to nip in, run in on goal and double the lead.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was introduced with 10 minutes to go, suggesting the forward was not fully fit, but it was too little, too late.

The 40-year-old AC Milan forward has now likely played his final World Cup finals match.

After suffering a late capitulation to miss out on automatic qualification via the group stage, 2018 World Cup quarter-finalists Sweden have now suffered the ultimate knockout blow.

The draw for the finals takes place this Friday in Doha with the World Cup getting under way on 21 November.

Spain Suffer First World Cup Qualifying Defeat Since 1993

Spain suffered their first World Cup qualifying defeat since 1993 as Sweden came from behind to end La Roja's 66-game run.

Carlos Soler volleyed Luis Enrique's Spain into an early lead in Stockholm on his international debut.

But just 12 seconds after play resumed Alexander Isak took advantage of a defensive mistake to slam home.

Viktor Claesson controlled Dejan Kulusevski's pass before firing in a famous winner from 12 yards out.

The previous team to beat Spain in a World Cup qualifier were Sweden's neighbors, Denmark, in March 1993 in Copenhagen.

Since then Spain had won 52 World Cup qualifiers and drawn the other 14.

The win takes Sweden top of Group B on nine points from three games.

Spain have seven points from four games and could be facing a play-off for a place at the 2022 World Cup with only the group winners qualifying automatically.

Ukraine Defeat Sweden To Secure Quarter-Final Clash With England

Artem Dovbyk scored in added time in extra time as Ukraine edged out 10-man Sweden at Hampden to set up a Euro 2020 quarter-final with England.

Oleksandr Zinchenko smashed Ukraine in front with a powerful drive but a deflected shot from Emil Forsberg levelled matters before half-time.

Sweden lost Marcus Danielson to a red card in extra time after a VAR check.

There was little in the way of goalmouth action after Danielson's 99th-minute dismissal until Zinchenko swung in a cross from the left and Dovbyk slid in to score his first international goal.

And, with penalties looming, Dovbyk - one of 12 substitutes used - headed a dramatic winner from close range.

Ukraine had crept through from the group phase with three points and a negative goal difference, while Sweden topped their section with seven points, ahead of Spain.
