Troost-Ekong Gives Nigerian National Team Allowances to Children in Akwa Ibom

Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has made a generous gesture by pledging his future camp allowances and match bonuses to support aspiring footballers in Akwa Ibom. The 30-year-old center-back, who plays for PAOK Thessaloniki and hails from Akwa Ibom State, announced his donation on Monday.

With a Dutch mother and a Nigerian father, Troost-Ekong maintains strong ties to his Ibibio roots and is committed to giving back to the community that shaped his family history. Widely respected among Akwa Ibom natives, Troost-Ekong's stellar performances for the national team, including his leadership as captain during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, have earned him admiration.

Despite Nigeria's loss in the final, Troost-Ekong emerged as the tournament's top scorer with three goals and was named MVP. His achievements were recognized by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, who honored him for his outstanding performance at the AFCON. During a reception at the Government House in Uyo, Troost-Ekong presented an Eagles jersey to the Governor as a gesture of gratitude for the state's support.

Although he was eligible to represent both the Netherlands and Nigeria internationally due to his heritage, Troost-Ekong ultimately chose to play for Nigeria. He made his senior debut for the Super Eagles in June 2015 and has since earned 71 caps, scoring seven goals.

Bassey And Onyeka Sidelined For Super Eagles Vs Mali Friendly

Calvin Bassey and Frank Onyeka have been sidelined from the upcoming friendly between Nigeria's Super Eagles and Mali's Eagles in Marrakech, Morocco. Both players, based in England, have returned to their respective bases due to injuries, failing to recover in time for the match.

The absence of Bassey and Onyeka is a notable setback for the Super Eagles, who are already facing the challenge of missing several key players. Both players played crucial roles in the Super Eagles' journey to the final of the AFCON 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in February, where they unfortunately lost to hosts Cote d’Ivoire.

Despite the absence of key players like William Troost-Ekong, Victor Osimhen, Ola Aina, and Taiwo Awoniyi, the Super Eagles secured an impressive victory over arch-rivals Ghana in Finidi George's inaugural game as caretaker head coach. Cyriel Dessers and AFCON 2023 standout Ademola Lookman found the net as the Super Eagles triumphed 2-1 in Marrakech.

These friendly matches serve as crucial preparation for both teams ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June. Nigeria's qualifying campaign got off to a somewhat rocky start with draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe in their first two matches. As they strive to secure their place in the World Cup, these friendlies provide valuable opportunities for tactical refinement and player assessment.

Iwobi faced criticism along with other players following Nigeria's 2-1 loss to Ivory Coast in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday.

The Fulham midfielder played for 79 minutes in the match, during which the Eagles failed to secure their fourth AFCON championship. Iwobi was substituted for Alhassan Yusuf in the final 10 minutes of the game.
