Withheld Salaries: SSANU Ends Warning Strike, To Review Situation

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has officially concluded its seven-day warning strike, giving the government more time to address the ongoing issues.

Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, the president of the association, announced the decision during a virtual stakeholders’ forum organized by the Education Writers Association of Nigeria (EWAN) in Lagos on Sunday. The forum, themed "Withheld Salaries vs Labour Crisis," also featured Mr. Ibeji Nwokoma, President of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU).

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of affected university labor unions had instructed members to halt operations on March 18, following the withholding of salaries for four months and the non-fulfillment of agreements made with the Federal Government in 2009.

According to Ibrahim, despite a meeting with government representatives in Abuja where the strike's impact was acknowledged, there were no substantial developments regarding the issues at hand.

He emphasized the vital role played by university staff in various essential services such as providing water, and electricity, and facilitating the mobilization of graduates for NYSC. The strike officially ended at midnight, with plans to reconvene at various branches to assess the outcome and determine the next steps.

Ibrahim issued a stern warning that failure to address the union's concerns would result in further action. The association has granted a window for the government to fulfill its obligations, but failure to do so will prompt "drastic action."

Call Off Warning Strike, FG Appeals To SSANU/NASU

As the seven-day warning strike declared by the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational (NASU) and Associated Institutions of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), enters its second day, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has thrown its weight behind the action.

The warning strike is in fulfillment of the earlier notice and ultimatum issued to the Federal Government by the Unions over the withheld salaries of their members

In a statement signed by its president, Joe Ajaero, the NLC said there had been no credible reason or explanation for withholding those salaries in the first place.

It urged the government to expeditiously pay the outstanding salaries, just as it advised taking for granted the maturity of the unions.

In compliance with the 7-day warning strike, members of SSANU staged protests across some universities. Some of them at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, voiced their concerns, just as the management said their grievances would be looked into.

Speaking earlier, SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, said they are protesting against unfair treatment in the form of the payment of members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) while SSANU members were left out.

SSANU, NASU Begin Nationwide Strike Today

The leadership of both the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has directed their members across campuses nationwide to withdraw their services today.

The seven-day warning strike is in fulfillment of the earlier notice and ultimatum issued to the Nigerian government by the unions over the unpaid withheld salaries of their members.

A memo issued by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of both SSANU and NASU urged the branch leaders to ensure total compliance with the directive.

The unions blamed the federal government and queried the justification for the payment of the withheld salaries of the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) but decided to leave out their members.
