Ex-Spain Coach Jorge Vilda Calls Post-World Cup Sacking Unfair

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) dismissed Vilda on Tuesday, with Montse Tome named his successor.

Vilda's exit came amid the fallout after the behaviour of RFEF president Luis Rubiales at the World Cup final.

"In sporting terms, I am going to accept all the criticisms, but on a personal level, I think it has been unfair," Vilda, 42, told Cadena SER.

"It has been a special year. Nothing has ever been said directly, but indirectly, things have been said that do not suit me. Things have been said that are not true."

Spain beat England in the World Cup final on 20 August, but the win was overshadowed by Rubiales kissing forward Jenni Hermoso, which she has said was not consensual.

Most of Vilda's coaching staff resigned, and 81 players refused to play for Spain in the aftermath.

Rubiales has refused to resign but has been provisionally suspended by Fifa, football's world governing body, with Pedro Rocha appointed interim president.

Aymeric Laporte leaves Manchester City for Al Nassr in £23.6m move

Spain defender Aymeric Laporte has left Manchester City to join Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr in a deal worth 27.5m euros (£23.6m).

Spain defender Aymeric Laporte has left Manchester City to join Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr in a deal worth 27.5m euros (£23.6m).

The 29-year-old joined City from Athletic Bilbao in January 2018 for a then club record £57m.
He helped City win 12 major honours but made just 24 appearances as the Blues won the Treble last season.
In a goodbye message on social media, Laporte thanked fans and team-mates for an “unforgettable” time at the club.
“It has lasted five-and-a-half unforgettable years. Plenty of memories that I will keep forever close to my heart,” said Laporte.
“From trophies to setbacks, victories to injuries, it’s all been part of my journey, and I’m grateful for absolutely every moment that shaped me into who I am today.

“It was an honour and a pleasure to wear these colours and I hope you will remember me in a good way. I will always be a City fan and I look forward to seeing you all again.”
Laporte made 180 appearances for City in total, scoring 12 goals, but he found opportunities limited last season.
Coach Pep Guardiola opted to use defenders Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake more often, and City spent £77m to bring in Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol earlier this month.

Laporte switched his international allegiance from France to Spain in May 2021 and already has 22 caps, helping them win the Uefa Nations League final in June.
He is the latest high profile player to move to Al Nassr, joining Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mane, Marcelo Brozovic, Alex Telles and Seko Fofana at the club.

Vlatko Andonovski Resigns After Earliest Women’s World Cup Exit

Vlatko Andonovski, the United States’ head coach, has resigned following the team’s poorest performance in a Women’s World Cup.

The four-time champions were eliminated on penalties by Sweden in the tournament’s final 16 this year.

It was the team’s earliest exit from a World Cup, after finishing at least third in every previous edition.
Twila Kilgore, the national team’s current assistant coach, has been chosen temporary head coach.

Andonovski’s record with the squad was 51 wins, five draws, and nine losses, with three victories, two draws, and five loses at big tournaments.

He took over as coach in October 2019 after Jill Ellis, who guided the team to back-to-back World Cup victories in 2015 and 2019, stepped down.

Andonovski’s tenure began smoothly, as he set a record for the best start for a US coach with 11 straight victories.

But a poor performance at the Olympics in Tokyo, where the US won bronze, put Andonovski under pressure.
The attention increased when the United States lost three consecutive games against England, Spain, and Germany in 2022, the team’s worst losing streak in 29 years.

The United States began the World Cup with a 3-0 victory over Vietnam, but a 1-1 tie with the Netherlands and a goalless draw with Portugal meant they placed second in their group. It was the first time in their history that they had failed to win at least two group games.

The United States was chastised for their efforts in the group stage, but they fared better against Sweden.

They were thwarted, though, by an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Zecira Musovic, who made 11 saves in 120 minutes to send the game to penalties.

England beat Australia to set up Spain showdown in their first Women’s World Cup final

England has made more history by reaching their first Women’s World Cup final, defeating Australia 3-1 to set up a match against Spain on Sunday.

The pre-match stroll centered on who would be regarded the underdog – the Euro 2022 champions or tournament co-hosts – as well as the two countries’ strong sporting history.

And it all added up to an exciting semi-final at Stadium Australia. Ella Toone (36) curled in a beautiful attempt as England drew first blood after the Matildas conceded their first World Cup goal since the second group game against Nigeria – a stretch of well over five hours.

Australia’s talismanic captain, Sam Kerr, returned to the XI and had her inevitable say in the 63rd minute, blasting home a spectacular shot from roughly 25 yards.

But England’s tournament pedigree began to shine through shortly after, with Lauren Hemp (71) putting the Lionesses back ahead before Alessia Russo (86) secured their place in Sunday’s showpiece final against Spain.

While co-hosts Australia, who had a fantastic home crowd in Sydney, can no longer win the tournament, they can finish third when they meet Sweden in the play-off on Saturday.
