Labour Minister, Simon Lalong, Meets Labour Leaders As Nationwide Strike Begins

Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, have made good their threat by embarking on a nationwide strike from midnight, over the assault on NLC President, Joe Ajaero on November 1st, as well as pending labour issues in Imo State.

Organized Labour had on November 7th, threatened a nationwide strike by Tuesday, November 14, if their demands are not met.

 

Recall that Ajaero alongside other Labour leaders who had gathered at the NLC State secretariat in Imo for a scheduled protest on November 1, were assaulted allegedly by agents of state.

 

The Labour Leaders were in Owerri to protest among other grievances backlog of unpaid salaries and allowances, Pensions, gratuities and non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act.

 

TUC President, Festus Osifo, who had earlier addressed reporters said the strike would remain total until governments accede to their demands.
A cross section of callers on our political programme, All out Politics, expressed divergent opinions on the strike by Organized Labour.

The Minister of Labour, Employment and Productivity, Simon Lalong has reportedly convened a meeting with labour leaders as the nationwide strike begins.

Leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC are expected at the meeting later today.

NLC May Boycott MOU Review Meeting If Labour Minister Simon Lalong Attends

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has threatened to boycott today’s meeting with the Federal Government if the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Simon Lalong, will attend.

The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, issued the threat while fielding questions from journalists at a briefing on the plights of workers in Imo State.

Labour unions and the government have been in negotiations over their planned industrial action owing to the removal of fuel subsidy.

But Ajaero criticized Lalong for not being able to establish a cordial relationship with the organized labour.

The labour leader also accused the Imo State Government of violating the workers' rights in the state and threatened to mobilize its members to storm the state on Wednesday, the first of November.

Chairman of the NGF and Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, in a statement expressed the governors’ concern about the development which was clearly an extra-judicial measure of addressing perceived infractions.

The northern governors frowned at the adoption of self-help in addressing grievances, which they observed could only lead to further chaos that could threaten law and order as well as the general peace and security of the society.

The NGF while commiserating with the family of the victim urged security agencies to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure that the law takes its full course on anyone found wanting or culpable in the circumstance.

Simon Lalong Relaxes Curfew Imposed Earlier

Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong has further relaxed the curfew imposed earlier on Jos North Local Government Area from 10pm to 6am.

Lalong who announced this in a statement also said the ban earlier placed on the operations of tricycles has been lifted.

It would be recalled that the curfew and ban on tricycles were invoked by the government in the wake of the recent attacks and killings in some parts of the state.

The statement signed by the Governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Macham Makut said the current status of the curfew in Jos South and Bassa Local Government Areas which still remains from 10pm to 6am.

However, the ban on motorcycles within the Jos/Bukuru Metropolis remains intact.

He said states, especially those from southern parts of the country, should put sentiments aside and work towards a federation that is one, by being their brothers’ keepers in sharing the VAT generated in their respective states.
