Sevilla Defeat Roma on Penalties to Win Their Seventh Europa League Title In a Row.

In Wednesday’s final in Budapest, Hungary, Sevilla overcame AS Roma to win a record-extending seventh Europa League title.

Sevilla won the penalty shootout 4-1 after 120 minutes of play ended 1-1.

José Mourinho will lose in a major European final for the first time after winning the previous five (two Champions League, two Europa League, and one Conference League).

Roma took the lead in the 35th minute when Paulo Dybala raced onto a through pass and tapped home.

Sevilla equalized in the 55th minute as Gianluca Mancini scrambled home Jesus Navas’ cross.

With 15 minutes remaining, Sevilla were awarded a penalty, but the decision was reversed after a VAR review.

Chris Smalling almost won it for Roma in the last seconds of extra time, but his header hit the crossbar.

The game was subsequently decided on penalties, with Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou making two saves before Argentina 2022 World Cup winner Gonzalo Montiel converted the winning kick.

Barcelona Beats Sevilla To Go Second In La Liga

Pedri scored a brilliant second-half goal as Barcelona beat Sevilla to move up to second in La Liga and keep their title hopes alive.

After a goalless first half, the 19-year-old midfielder showed great composure on the edge of the box to thump a shot into the bottom corner.

Sevilla had a penalty shout in the first half when Anthony Martial's shot hit Ronald Araujo's arm.

But Barcelona were the better side as Gerard Pique also hit the post.

Defender Pique, though, was perhaps fortunate not to be sent off late on as he pulled back Jesus Corona, who looked set to run clear on goal.

But Barcelona held out to take a crucial three points and extend their unbeaten run to 14 games. They are now 12 points behind leaders Real Madrid with a game in hand.

Sevilla had started the day in second place, but dropped to fourth, behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid on goal difference, as their own 15-game run without defeat came to an end.

West Ham Edged Out At Sevilla

West Ham’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League hang in the balance after they fell to a narrow defeat at Sevilla in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

Munir El Haddadi scored the game’s only goal for the six-time winners, sweeping in superbly from Marcos Acuna’s free-kick on the hour mark.

Until that point David Moyes’ West Ham side had more than held their own in their first knockout tie in a major European competition since 1981.

Nikola Vlasic headed an early opportunity straight at Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, Michail Antonio then missing his kick with the follow up from close range.

Croatian forward Vlasic also saw Bounou tip a low driven effort around the post with Tomas Soucek also testing the home goalkeeper and Manuel Lanzini seeing his close-range effort blocked as the Hammers tried to breach the meanest defence in La Liga.

An end-to-end affair also saw the hosts create several openings of note with Munir heading wide from Jesus Corona’s cross, Youssef En-Nesyri going close and Lucas Ocampos flashing an effort across the face of the West Ham goal.

Real Madrid Denied La Liga Top Spot By Sevilla

A late Diego Carlos own goal earned a point for Real Madrid against Sevilla as the defending champions were denied top spot in La Liga.

Toni Kroos' shot in the 94th minute deflected in off Carlos as Real levelled for a second time to go two points behind leaders Atletico Madrid.

Fernando put Sevilla ahead midway through the first half after slotting in from Ivan Rakitic's knock-down.

Substitute Marco Asensio equalised for Real before Rakitic scored a penalty.

Rakitic's spot-kick came after Eder Militao was penalised for a handball following a video assistant referee review, but only after Karim Benzema had been brought down in the penalty area at the opposite end by Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou during a frantic few minutes.

Benzema appeared to have put Real ahead after 12 minutes with a header from Alvaro Odriozola's cross, however a VAR review found the full-back to be marginally offside.

Two points now separate Spain's top three - with Barcelona, in third, level on points with Real - with three games remaining.
