Liverpool Defeat Southampton To Keep Title Hopes Alive

Liverpool took the Premier League title race down to the final day of the season after surviving a potential scare following the team’s comeback to win at Southampton.

The visitors began to struggle early on and were made to pay for it when Nathan Redmond gave Southampton a 13th-minute lead with a curling right-foot shot beyond Alisson.

Jurgen Klopp made nine changes from the side that won the FA Cup by beating Chelsea on penalties at Wembley on Saturday, once again showed their resilience and reserves of strength as Takumi Minamino levelled before half-time with a thumping drive against the club where he spent a spell on loan last season.

The leveler handed Liverpool the momentum heading into the second half with the team putting the hosts under pressure and were rewarded with a deserved lead after 67 minutes when Joel Matip sent an instinctive looping header over Saints’ keeper Alex McCarthy.

Jurgen Klopp’s charges knew anything short of victory would hand the title to Manchester City – while even a draw would effectively end the challenge because of their inferior goal difference.

City will still retain their title with victory over Aston Villa at Etihad Stadium but Liverpool have pushed them all the way again and ensured the fight will go down to the wire.

Osaka, Nadal And Salah Among Laureus Awards Winners

Japan's Naomi Osaka has been named Sportswoman of the Year at the Laureus World Sports Awards, with fellow tennis player Rafael Nadal the men's winner.

Osaka won the US Open in 2020, while Spaniard Nadal equalled Roger Federer's record of 20 Grand Slam men's titles by winning last year's French Open.

Laureus cited the "powerful statement" made by Osaka at the US Open, where in each round she came on to court wearing a face mask bearing the name of a different African-American victim of alleged police or racist violence.

Nadal's win was his fourth Laureus award, having previously won the Breakthrough, Comeback and main men's awards.

Liverpool and Egypt striker Mohamed Salah won the Sporting Inspiration award for "his unique contribution over many years to those in need and for those less fortunate".

German football champions Bayern Munich, who won last season's Champions League, were named Team of the Year.

Tennis legend Billie Jean King received the Lifetime Achievement award.

Briton Lewis Hamilton claimed the inaugural Athlete Advocate award, which has been brought in to acknowledge the wider impact on society made by athletes.

During the 2020 Formula 1 season, Hamilton took a knee on the grid and wore anti-racism slogans as he won a record-equaling seventh drivers' title, while his Mercedes team also adopted a black livery for the campaign in a stand against discrimination.

Salah Confident Liverpool’s Season Will Get Better

Mohamed Salah is confident Liverpool's season is going to get better after a disastrous run between January and March derailed their Premier League title defense.

Jurgen Klopp's side was top of the table at Christmas but a run of just three wins and eight defeats in 14 league matches left them as outsiders to finish in the top four.

Back-to-back wins against RB Leipzig, setting up a Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid, and Wolves have lifted confidence and Salah believes they can start looking forward again.

"I'm happy about our last results, so hopefully we can just keep winning," the Egypt international, who has joined up with the national team for Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Kenya and Comoros, told liverpoolfc.com.

"It's tough for all of us because of the situation we have been through and our position in the Premier League, but I believe it's going to be better.

"In the Champions League, we are doing good."

Despite Liverpool's poor run, Salah is still this season's joint Premier League top-scorer alongside Harry Kane on 17.
