Liverpool Earn First Leg Advantage Over Inter Milan

Liverpool took a huge step towards the Champions League quarter-finals after scoring two late goals against Inter Milan in the San Siro.

The Reds looked set for a goalless draw in the first leg in Italy until Brazil forward Roberto Firmino got on the end of Andrew Robertson’s corner to head his side into the lead.

Mohamed Salah added a second with a deflected effort from inside the box which means Jurgen Klopp’s side take a sizeable advantage into the second leg at Anfield on 8 March.

Italian champions Inter hit the bar through Hakan Çalhanoglu and were on top for long periods of the second half before Firmino struck in the 75th minute.

Liverpool scored from their only two attempts on target and will be firm favourites to progress when the two sides meet in the deciding leg next month.

It was a particularly memorable night for midfielder Harvey Elliott, who became the youngest player ever to start a match in the competition for Liverpool at the age of 18 years and 318 days.

The only negative on an otherwise upbeat night for the Reds was an injury to Portugal forward Diogo Jota, who was replaced by goalscorer Firmino at the start of the second half after suffering an ankle injury.

Firmino And Alexander-Arnold to Return for Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino could return for Liverpool in Saturday’s Premier League trip to Brentford.

Firmino has not featured since suffering a hamstring injury against Chelsea on August 31 while Alexander-Arnold missed the last two games due to illness.

James Milner and Neco Williams have also returned to training ahead of the trip to Brentford Community Stadium, but Naby Keita could miss out along with Thiago Alcantara

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said: “Trent was not injured, Trent was a little bit ill. He’s back in training, trained yesterday (Wednesday) and will be fine.

“Bobby trained already for two or three days, so he is back in contention, let me say it like this. We used him a little bit as a ‘joker’ [in training].

“But he will be in the normal training and then we have to make a decision if we take him with us or not. Porto, 100 per cent. Brentford, we have to see.”

Liverpool Midfielder Thiago Alcantara to Miss At Least Two Games with Calf Injury

Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara will miss a minimum of two matches with a calf problem.

The 30-year-old picked up the injury in Saturday’s 3-0 win against Crystal Palace and the Reds will examine scans to discover the extent of the damage.

Liverpool visit Norwich City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday before a league trip to Brentford on Saturday.

Thiago was replaced by Naby Keita after 62 minutes in the win over the Eagles at Anfield.

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold also missed the game against Palace through illness and will again be absent at Norwich, while forward Roberto Firmino has resumed training after missing three matches with a hamstring injury.
