Rangers And PSV Level After First-Leg Thriller

Rangers' hopes of ending their 12-year absence from the Champions League group stage is after an enthralling draw with PSV Eindhoven.

The Ibrox side fell behind to Ibrahim Sangare's thumping finish, only to hit back swiftly with Antonio Colak's well-crafted equaliser.

Goalkeeper Walter Benitez's howler, spilling a Tom Lawrence free-kick, gifted the hosts a second-half lead.

But they were denied a comeback win by Armando Obispo's 78th-minute header.

Slick PSV then almost snatched victory in a breathless contest, with Jon McLaughlin making a sprawling save from Philipp Max. The sides meet again in the play-off second leg next Wednesday in Eindhoven to decide who progresses to the lucrative group stage.

They had Rangers on the ropes for much of the second half as Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side struggled to match the electric home performances of last season's run to the Europa League final.

It's the Champions League top table where Rangers now long to be and they travel to the Netherlands with their dream very much intact having posed PSV's vulnerable defence problems.

Ramsey Misses Penalty As Frankfurt Claim Europa League Title

Rangers suffered an agonising penalty shootout defeat in their fifth European final as Eintracht Frankfurt triumphed in an absorbing Europa League decider.

Rafael Borre crashed in the decisive spot kick after Aaron Ramsey was denied just moments earlier in front of a colossal Rangers support in the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

Those fans had been euphoric when the Scots took the lead through Joe Aribo’s ice-cool second-half finish in the sweltering cauldron in Seville.

However, Borre detonated raucous scenes in a jam-packed Eintracht end 12 minutes later as he steered in a soft equaliser to send this energy-sapping contest to extra time and penalties.

And Rangers’ players crumpled to their feet as the 11th-placed side in the Bundesliga prevailed in the shootout, executing five composed penalties to claim their second European trophy and a place in next season’s Champions League group stages.

Rangers’ Kemar Roofe Declared Fit Ahead Of Europa League Final

Rangers’ bid to claim the Europa League title has been handed a huge boost with the return of striker Kemar Roofe.

The 29-year-old has been sidelined since injuring a knee in the Scottish Cup semi-final win over Celtic on April 17.

Manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst may well call upon the man with 17 goals this term for the showpiece against Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville on Wednesday night.

“He is important and I am happy for him,” said the Rangers boss.

“He is there and ready to play a part.”

Rangers will unfortunately be without long-term absentees Alfredo Morelos, Ianis Hagi and Filip Helander but are otherwise expected to have a fully-fit squad ahead of the final.

The return of Jamaica international Roofe will offer an out-and-out striking option which Van Bronckhorst was short of in both legs of their semi-final against RB Leipzig.

Meanwhile, It has been a mixed bag of a season for Frankfurt who have had a pretty mediocre domestic campaign which ended with a 2-2 draw away to Mainz, leaving them 11th in the Bundesliga table.

In truth their run away from Europe has been poor for some time, with Frankfurt’s last league win coming in March against Bochum.

An eight-game domestic winless run has been punctured with some truly magic moments to offer pangs of hope for the thousands travelling to Seville from central Germany.

Oliver Glasner’s team have not lost in Europe all season, while Barcelona and West Ham have both been sent packing in recent rounds.

In attack, Rafael Borre will be leading the line. In the league he is Frankfurt’s leading scorer with a rather modest tally of eight, however, goals against Barcelona and West Ham have been key to his side’s progression.

Malmo Stun Rangers In Champions League Qualifying Round

Swedish side Malmo clinched a shock 2-1 victory of over Scottish champions Rangers in a thrilling Champions League qualifying encounter.

Soren Rieks and Veljko Birmancevic scored within two minutes of the restart to put Malmo in command, and they looked set to maintain their lead, but for Steven Davis' crucial intervention.

Davis' "big moment" has given Rangers "an important lifeline" in their quest to reach the Champions League group stage despite defeat by Malmo, says manager Steven Gerrard.

Davis rattled the ball home from the edge of the box in the 95th minute of a difficult night for the Scottish champions in Sweden.

The lone goal places Rangers in a stronger position for the return leg next Tuesday at Ibrox, where they boast a formidable record.

"It's not the position we wanted to be in but it's a lot better than going in at 2-0. We were also on the verge of it going worse as well," Gerrard told Rangers TV.

"We're going to have to go up levels individually and collectively for next week. In my honest opinion there are six or seven that need to raise their level and raise it sharply."
