Rafael Nadal: 12-Time Barcelona Open Winner Set for Comeback After Lengthy Injury Break

Rafael Nadal is set to make his comeback at the Barcelona Open, while Jack Draper and Emma Raducanu will compete in Munich and Stuttgart respectively. Nadal, a 12-time champion in Barcelona, has confirmed his readiness to face Flavio Cobolli in the first round today at 3 p.m BST.

Despite not playing since the Brisbane International in January due to a micro muscle tear, Nadal expressed his fitness in a press conference on Monday and intends to continue practicing on clay in preparation for the tournament. The 37-year-old, a record 14-time winner at the French Open, has had to postpone his return following the injury in Brisbane, leading to withdrawals from several tournaments.

However, he aims to regain form on his favored surface, with the French Open looming on May 20. Stefanos Tsitsipas, who recently won the Monte Carlo title, believes Nadal remains a formidable opponent on clay, predicting a potential appearance by Nadal in the Barcelona final.

Tsitsipas emphasized Nadal's competitiveness and experience, stating that Nadal's prowess on clay makes him the ultimate challenge for any opponent, regardless of his stage in his career.

Rafael Nadal Loses To Borna Coric On Return From Injury

Rafael Nadal's return from injury ended in defeat as the Spaniard suffered a three-set defeat to Borna Coric at the Western and Southern Open.

The 36-year-old was beaten 6-7(9), 6-4, 3-6 in what marked his first appearance since he was forced to withdraw from Wimbledon ahead of his semi-final against Nick Kyrgios due to an abdominal tear.

Coric, making his own return having missed Wimbledon through injury went toe-to-toe with Nadal from the start as both rescued two set points during a gruelling first-set tie break that eventually fell to the Croatian.

Nadal responded strongly to level the match in the second after claiming the first break point of the contest, before surrendering an early break in the decider as Coric pulled away for the victory.

The result denied the world No 3 a return back to the top of the ATP rankings, though he will get the opportunity to do so again at the US Open.

Rafael Nadal Out Of Wimbledon Semi-Finals Due To Abdominal Injury

Rafael Nadal’s hopes of completing a rare calendar year Grand Slam ended on Thursday when the Spaniard pulled out of his highly-anticipated showdown with Australian Nick Kyrgios with an abdominal strain.

The Spaniard battled to a five-set victory over Taylor Fritz in his quarter-final despite struggling with an abdominal problem and said afterwards he would seek medical advice before deciding whether to take on Kyrgios in the semi-finals on Friday.

Nadal’s scheduled Australian opponent will now receive a walkover into a maiden major final.

The 36-year-old insisted he made his tough decision due to the abdominal issue preventing him from being able to serve.

Having triumphed at the Australian and French Opens this year, Nadal and had been hoping to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to complete the calendar-year Grand Slam.

He will be sidelined for “three to four weeks”, with the US Open – scheduled to take place at the end of August – a target for the 22-time Grand Slam champion.

Rafael Nadal Overcomes Injury to Beat Taylor Fritz in Five-Set Quarter-Final Thriller

Rafael Nadal came from behind to beat Taylor Fritz in a five-set quarter-final thriller at Wimbledon as the Spaniard battled injury to keep alive his hopes of a calendar Grand Slam.

Nadal appeared on the verge of withdrawing as he called the trainer to tend to an abdominal issue during the second set, but twice came from a set down against the American to seal a remarkable 3-6 7-5 3-6 7-5 7-6 (10-4) victory in four hours and 20 minutes.

The 36-year-old Spaniard, who won the Australian Open and French Open earlier this year to reach a men’s record 22 Grand Slam singles titles, will face Nick Kyrgios in Friday’s semi-final, after the Australian advanced to the last four for the first time with a straight-sets win over Cristian Garin.

It was American Fritz, seeded 11, who halted Nadal’s winning start to the season at 20 matches in the Indian Wells final in March when the Spaniard was hampered by a fractured rib, and it appeared history was repeating itself.

Nadal seized control of the deciding tie-break by winning the first five points and, although Fritz briefly threatened a comeback, he could not deny the remarkable Spaniard as he clinched victory.
