James Rodriguez in Talks with Qatari Club

Everton’s James Rodriguez is in talks with a club in Qatar about a potential move to the Middle East.

The former Real Madrid midfielder is yet to play a game since the arrival of Rafa Benitez as manager.

The 2014 World Cup Golden Boot winner had an option to move to Portugal during the transfer window but a deal could not be agreed with Porto.

The official line from the club was that Rodriguez was in Benitez’s plans ‘until August 31’, but Qatar could prove to be an escape route with the transfer window open until September 30.

James has used streaming service Twitch to provide his followers with updates on his future, which has angered many supporters.

The 30-year-old arrived at Goodison Park on a free transfer in September 2020, reuniting for a third time with then-manager Carlo Ancelotti.

He signed a two-year deal, with an option of a third, and became the highest-paid player in Everton’s history.

Everton Appoint Rafa Benitez As New Manager

Everton have appointed former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez as their new manager.

The 61-year-old Spaniard has signed a three-year deal and succeeds Carlo Ancelotti, who resigned in early June to return to Real Madrid.

"I am delighted to be joining Everton," said Benitez.

"I believe this is a club that is going places. I'm determined to play a big part in helping this great club achieve its ambitions."

Benitez last managed in the Premier League at Newcastle United, leaving in June 2019.

He moved to China to coach Dalian Professional FC and left them in January after 18 months in charge.

Everton say Benitez "will commence work with the squad when they return for pre-season training from 5 July".

Everton Set To Appoint Rafa Benitez After Agreeing To A Three-Year Deal

Everton are close to confirming the appointment of ex-Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez as successor to Carlo Ancelotti after he agreed a three-year deal.

The contentious arrival of the 61-year is now seen as a formality after he impressed Everton owner Farhad Moshiri in several rounds of talks.

Benitez won the Champions League and the FA Cup in a six-year spell at local rivals, Liverpool.

Ancelotti resigned in early June to return to Real Madrid.

In a historic and controversial move, Benitez will join William Edward Barclay, who was part of the original foundation of Everton in the 1890s and later the breakaway Liverpool club, as the only men to cross the city divide to manage both clubs.

The formal announcement is all that remains to seal an appointment that has brought a mixed reaction from Everton fans, after Benitez caused a furore by calling Liverpool’s arch-rivals a “small club” after a goalless derby at Anfield in February 2007.

Benitez insisted he made “a mistake” and he was referring to the approach of David Moyes’ team rather than Everton as a club, but his remarks have not been forgotten by many on the blue half of Merseyside.

Former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo was the early favourite after interest from Everton but Benitez has been in pole position for a fortnight after staging several rounds of talks.

He spent 18 months in charge of the Chinese Super League club before leaving in January.
