Seyi Makinde Participates in NLC Protest in Oyo State

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde joined the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress in a peaceful protest on Tuesday.

The workers initiated their protest from the NLC state secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan, and proceeded to the Gate, NTA, and Yemetu roundabouts, where Governor Makinde joined them.

During the demonstration, Governor Makinde reassured the protesters that the current challenges would soon be addressed. He expressed awareness of the hardships faced by the people and emphasized his commitment to being part of the solution.

Governor Makinde stated, "I am aware of the hardship in town and the difficulty the people are going through, but I will be part of the generation that will fix the country." He also pledged to ensure that the workers' letters of protest and grievances would reach President Bola Tinubu.

Prior to the governor's involvement, the state NLC Chairman, Kayode Martins, highlighted the unbearable cost of living, particularly for the average citizen. He emphasized the frustration felt by the populace, stating, "The cost of living in Nigeria today is nothing to write home about, and the people are fed up, so that's why we are on the street now."

Afenifere Urges Yorubas Against Participating In Protests, Rallies

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, has urged Yorubas against participating in any protest or rally amid the planned demonstrations by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) slated for February 27 and 28.

Earlier, the NLC announced plans to embark on a two-day strike to protest the hardship currently being faced by Nigerians following the dramatic hike in the prices of goods and services due to the removal of fuel subsidies and the free fall of the naira, among others.

Angry Nigerians have since protested in Niger, Oyo, and Osun, among other states, asking the Federal Government to take decisive steps to bring the hardship to an end.

In a statement today, Afenifere leader, Reuben Fasoranti, urged Nigerians to come to terms with the realities of the nation’s challenges.

He said President Bola Tinubu’s administration is working to resolve the challenges it has inherited over the years.

Pa Fasoranti added that while acknowledging the hardships faced by the people, it is important to recognize that these economic measures, although difficult, are part of a larger strategy aimed at restoring economic prosperity and stability in Nigeria.

Protest Breaks Out In Ibadan Over High Cost Of Living

In Oyo State, angered by the soaring cost of living, food inflation, and the prevailing economic challenges, local youths have taken to the streets in protest. Their chants echoed through the air as they voiced their grievances.

The demonstrators clarified their frustrations by carrying placards bearing messages such as ‘End Food Hike and Inflation’, ‘The Poor Are Starving’, and ‘Tinubu, Don’t Forget Your Promises’.

Despite the peaceful nature of the rally, armed policemen were present at the protest site, a precautionary measure in light of the recent warnings from law enforcement regarding maintaining peace during such demonstrations.

The protests in Ibadan follow similar demonstrations in other parts of the country, including Kano and Minna. These rallies highlight the widespread frustration caused by factors such as the removal of petrol subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange rates, which have contributed to food price inflation and a surge in the cost of living.

Commotion As Police Tear Gas Protesting UNILAG Students

On Wednesday, a chaotic scene unfolded as officers of the Nigerian Police Force discharged tear gas in response to students from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) who had gathered to protest against a tuition fee increase.

Initially, the protest seemed peaceful, with students rallying around the school to voice their concerns. However, tensions escalated when police officers, who were present to monitor the students, fired shots.

The day before, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) had warned the Department of State Services (DSS), cautioning against obstructing students from exercising their universally recognized right to protest. NANS argued that the DSS's statement on Monday, suggesting that some politicians were inciting student leaders to violent protests against the Federal Government on socio-economic issues, was mere propaganda. Giwa Temitope, the National Public Relations Officer of the union, confidently asserted that the protest would proceed as planned.
