Federal Governement Set To Transfer 613 Repentant Terrorists To Their States

According to Gen. Lucky Irabor, Chief of Defence Staff, 613 rehabilitated low-risk repentant terrorists would be returned to respective state governments for reintegration into society.

Irabor made the announcement on Thursday at the fifth Stakeholders’ Meeting of Operation Safe Corridor (OPSC) in Abuja.

The CDS, represented by Maj.-Gen. Adeyemi Yekini, Chief of Defence Training and Operations, said that the 613 clients are now undergoing deradicalization and rehabilitation at the OPSC.

He said that the gathering will thoroughly review the Deradicalization, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration (DRR) Programme before the rehabilitated clients were sent to their respective state governments.

According to Irabor, President Muhammadu Buhari formed the OPSC in September 2015 as a channel for willing and repentant terrorists to lay down their guns and participate in a systematic DRR program.

NASS Screens Lauretta Onochie, Others For NDDC Roles

The Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Niger Delta have screened Special Assistant on Social Media to President Muhammadu Buhari, Lauretta Onochie, as Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Board.

Onochie was screened by the joint committees alongside 13 others for NDDC board roles.

However, there were reservations by some committee members against her nomination notably on the grounds that she is not from an oil-producing community in Delta State where she hails from, which is against the NDDC Act.

A committee member, Senator Seriake Dickson, noted this during the screening exercise.

However, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele differed with Dickson, arguing that his claim is not explicitly stated in the NDDC Act.

This is the second time President BUHARI forwarded a list of nominees for the NDDC board for confirmation.

SERAP Sues Buhari Over ‘Security Agencies’ Access To Subscribers’ Details’ Via Nin-Sim Linkage

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sued President Muhammadu Buhari for failing to rescind his “approval” for security agencies to access people’s details via NIN-SIM linkage without due process of law.

The agencies were reportedly granted access to the database of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

The suit FHC/L/CS/448/2022 was filed Friday at the Federal High Court in Lagos by Kolawole Oluwadare and Opeyemi Owolabi.

SERAP is asking the court to determine whether the approval is consistent with the principles of legality and necessity.

The applicants are requesting an order setting it aside due to “violations of private and digital communication rights, right to family life, human dignity and personal liberty”.

They want an order of perpetual injunction restraining the Federal Government, any other authority or group of persons from access to NIN-SIM details.

The organization said millions of law-abiding Nigerians may feel that their private lives are the subject of constant surveillance.

SERAP argues that in a digital age, protecting the right to privacy requires exceptional attention and that interference with the right to privacy is not permissible.

The suit insists individuals should freely receive and share information of a personal nature without interference from the authorities.

SERAP noted that access to people’s personal details would contravene section 37 of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended), article 17 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The other is article 5 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which protect against arbitrary or unlawful interference with one’s privacy.”

“The power to access individual’s details raises serious concerns as to their arbitrary use by the authorities responsible for applying them”, the suit reads.

The Respondents are Abubakar Malami (SAN) Attorney General and Minister of Justice, and Isa Ali Pantami, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy.

No date has been fixed for hearing of the suit.

Federal Government Promises to Improve Access to Foreign Exchange for Importation of Raw Materials

The federal government says it will improve access to foreign exchange for the importation of raw materials and machines unavailable locally.

President MUHAMMADU BUHARI said this in Abuja while responding to requests from the manufacturing sector on how to increase its contribution to the Nigerian economy.

The government had banned forex on the importation of selected items into Nigeria.

BUHARI told the leadership of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria that the relevant ministry would revisit their concerns about the increase in excise duties on the identified products and other tariff-related matters.

In her remarks, MARIAM KATAGUM, minister of state, industry, trade and investment, said MAN is in business to create a climate of opinion in this country so that manufacturers can operate efficiently and profitably for the benefit of all.
