Lagos Police Arrest Woman For Poisoning One-Year-Old Daughter

A woman known as Rukayat is currently in police custody in Oworonshoki, Lagos, for allegedly poisoning her one-year-old daughter with an insecticide.

The incident, which took place around 11 am on Friday, unfolded when Rukayat brought her daughter to LUTH for treatment, revealing later that she poisoned the child due to frustration with her epilepsy.

The police confirmed the arrest, stating that an investigation is underway, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter. This unfortunate event echoes a similar incident last year when a woman named Lilian Nwarache died after consuming insecticide in Iwaya, Lagos, driven by frustration with her illness.

Chinalu Ogbonna, aged 27, has been arrested by the police in Umuahia, Abia State, for the murder of his father. Suspected of involvement in 'Yahoo Plus,' Chinalu reportedly strangled his 57-year-old father, Mmaduka Ogbonna, at their residence on Umueze Road, Umuahia. He then proceeded to remove his father's left eye, allegedly intending to use it for money rituals.

The spokesperson for the Abia State Police Command, ASP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the tragic incident to journalists. She stated that a murder case involving Mmaduka Ogbonna was reported at the Central Police Station (CPS) on Monday around 8:00 a.m.

Chinaka explained, "Detectives from CPS Umuahia visited the crime scene and found the deceased’s lifeless body with his left eye gouged out. The suspect, Chinalu Ogbonna, a 27-year-old male residing with his father at Umueze Road, opposite Junior Girls Secondary School Amuzukwu Ibeku, has been apprehended."

Investigations revealed that Chinalu allegedly strangled his father to death with the intention of using his left eye for money rituals. The deceased's body has been deposited at the morgue for autopsy, and relevant exhibits have been recovered.

"The case is currently under investigation and will be charged to court," added the police PPRO.

This disturbing incident follows another recent case in Umunneochi LGA, where a man named Marcel Udeh allegedly killed his son for eating the last portion of food in their kitchen without permission. Udeh has also been arrested, and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet investigation.

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has apprehended Samaila Fafa, also known as Habu Ibrahim, the second individual among two notorious kidnappers for whom FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, had offered a N20 million reward. According to a statement by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, the arrest took place on February 24, 2024, around 7:05 pm. This operation was conducted based on credible intelligence as operatives raided Sardauna Forest in the Toto area of Nasarawa State.

On February 14, 2024, Nyesom Wike, the former Rivers State governor, announced a N20 million bounty for the capture of two wanted bandits, Dahiru Adamu and Abu Ibrahim, suspected of terrorizing Abuja. The announcement came during Wike's meeting with FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth Igweh, coinciding with the parade of 23 criminal suspects at the FCT Police Command Headquarters in Garki, Abuja.

Previously, the anti-kidnapping unit of the FCT police command had apprehended Saidu Abdulkadir, also known as Dahiru Adamu, one of the wanted kidnappers, during a raid on two kidnappers' camps bordering Nasarawa and Abuja via Kuje Area Council on February 15, 2024, around midnight.

Josephine Adeh stated, "The suspect [Samaila Fafa] is one of the two kidnappers the Honorable Minister FCT placed a bounty on, as the other one, namely Saidu Abdulkadir A.K.A. Dahiru Adamu, had earlier been arrested by the Command. He confessed that his syndicate masterminded and executed several kidnappings in FCT and its environs, including the abduction of Barr. Chris Agidy, who provided legal aid to Senator Ned Nwoko. Mr. Sunday Yahaya Zakwai, the district head of Ketti Village, was also killed by them. Samaila Wakili further led police operatives to where the remains of Barr. Chris Agidy is. The remains were recovered and deposited in Gwagwalada General Hospital."

Adeh mentioned that investigations were ongoing, with CP Benneth Igwe reiterating his commitment to combating crime and ensuring the safety of residents.

Insecurity: Police Begin Joint Patrol On Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

The police in Lagos and Ogun States have initiated a collaborative patrol along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to bolster regional security.

SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police, revealed this in a recent post on his social media handle, @benHundeyin, on Thursday.

There have been reports of kidnapping incidents and other criminal activities occurring in various sections of the expressway, prompting this joint effort between the two states.

Hundeyin stated that the joint patrols would span from Kara Bridge to Sagamu Interchange. "In a bid to heighten security along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the Lagos State Police Command, in conjunction with its Ogun State counterpart, has initiated joint patrols from Kara Bridge to Sagamu Interchange," he announced.

He reassured motorists not to be alarmed by the increased police presence on the road. "Motorists are encouraged not to be alarmed by the intensified police patrols, especially by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS). This proactive measure aims to deter crime and ensure the safety of travelers along this route," Hundeyin emphasized.
