‘Our Nation’s Judiciary Has Never Been Shaken,’ Tinubu Hails S’Court Verdict

President Bola Tinubu has hailed the Supreme Court verdict that upheld his election victory at the February 25 presidential poll, stating the nation’s judiciary has never been shaken.

The apex court, in its ruling, dismissed the appeals by the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar; and his Labour Party (LP) counterpart, Peter Obi.

A seven-judge panel ruled as without merit the opposition appeals over claims of fraud, electoral law violations, and Tinubu’s ineligibility to run for president.

The apex court also thrashed all the grounds of appeal of Atiku and the PDP on qualification, non-compliance with the Electoral Act, the 25% votes in FCT, and electoral malpractices.

Speaking at the presidential villa in Abuja after the court’s verdict, the President said the judgment has laid to rest the agitations trailing the outcome of the keenly contested poll.

He said the verdict has put an end to the distraction the litigations brought, which will allow the government forcus on delivering the dividends of democracy.

He commended the judiciary for demonstrating its commitment to upholding the rule of law, while urging Nigerians across board to unite and work towards the common interest of the country.

Supreme Court Upholds President Tinubu’s Victory, Strikes Out Obi, Atiku’s Appeal

Today, the Supreme Court of Nigeria has rejected the appeal brought forth by the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, and his Labour Party (LP) counterpart, Peter Obi, challenging President Bola Tinubu's victory in the February 25 presidential election. The court has upheld the decision of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, confirming President Tinubu's legitimacy as the duly elected President of Nigeria.

A seven-judge panel found the opposition's appeals, which alleged fraud, electoral law violations, and Tinubu’s presidential eligibility, without merit. Presided over by Justice Inyang Okoro, the Supreme Court also ruled that the failure of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to transmit the 2023 presidential election results to iRev electronically did not impact the election's outcome in favour of Bola Tinubu.

Furthermore, the Supreme Court dismissed Atiku Abubakar's attempt to introduce new evidence regarding Bola Tinubu's alleged forgery from Chicago State University, as it could not rule on an application the election petition tribunal had not previously addressed.

In addition, the Supreme Court rejected the petition to invalidate Bola Tinubu's presidential election win based on the argument that he did not secure 25% of the votes in the Federal Capital Territory.

In conclusion, Justice Okoro stated, “On the whole, having resolved all the issues against the appellant, it is my view that there is no merit in the appeal, and it is hereby dismissed.” The judgment delivered on September 6th, 2023, affirming the election of the second respondent as the duly elected President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, stands affirmed by the Supreme Court.

Supreme Court Dismisses Atiku’s Fresh Evidence, Says It’s A Friendly Joke

The Supreme Court has rejected Atiku Abubakar's request to introduce new evidence in his appeal against President Bola Tinubu, citing a lack of jurisdiction.

The apex court characterized Atiku's petition as a non-serious matter that couldn't be entertained, stating that the case was filed beyond the stipulated time and couldn't establish a forgery claim.

Atiku had sought permission from the Supreme Court to present fresh evidence of Tinubu's academic records, received from Chicago State University on October 2.

He argued that this evidence was crucial to his appeal, but the Supreme Court ruled it had no authority to consider the new evidence due to constitutional time limits. The judgment is currently underway.

Scoring 25% Of Votes In FCT Not Mandatory, Supreme Court Rules

The Supreme Court concurs with the Court of Appeal's ruling that the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, is to be treated similarly to other states.

The presiding justice, John Okoro, questioned presidential eligibility based on vote percentages across states, emphasizing that the law does not preclude a candidate who scores 25% votes in 30 states but not in Abuja from becoming president.

This aligns with the Supreme Court's agreement with the Court of Appeal's decision. Further details will be provided soon.
