Wike Not Behind 27 PDP Lawmakers’ Defection – Rivers APC

The new caretaker committee of the Rivers State chapter of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) has debunked reports linking the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to the defection of 27 members of the House of Assembly.

27 of the 32 Rivers State lawmakers had defected from the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to the opposition APC yesterday.

Hours after the Tony Okocha-led committee welcomed the 27 new converts at its party secretariat in Port Harcourt, top party members have refuted the reports making the round that Wike must have initiated the move to unseat the current state governor, Sim Fubara.

Reacting in a phone interview, the secretary of the APC caretaker committee, Eric Nwibani, disclosed that there was no iota of truth in the viral report.

Nwibani further stated that, as much as they see the defection as a welcome development, linking the former Rivers State Governor to the move was a figment of the imagination of those peddling the speculation.

The acting spokesperson for the Rivers APC committee, Chibuike Ikenga, also shared the sentiment of the secretary, saying the recent development reflected their efforts to rebuild the party after the dissolution of the former excos.

PDP, NNPP And Five Others Form Coalition

On Wednesday, a new coalition of seven opposition political parties was established to fortify democracy in the country. Known as the Coalition of Concerned Political Parties, the movement was inaugurated in Abuja during a meeting attended by leaders of the political parties at the National Secretariat of the Social Democratic Party.

The coalition comprises the People’s Democratic Party, African Democratic Congress, Social Democratic Party, Peoples Allied Movement, New Nigeria Peoples Party, Young Progressives Party, and Zenith Labour Party. This development follows concerns raised by Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate, during a meeting with the Inter-party Advisory Council in November. Atiku expressed apprehension about the country becoming a one-party state, calling for unity among opposition forces.

Expressing unease about the prevailing instability in the country, the coalition urged the judicial system to safeguard Nigeria's democracy and free itself from political and executive interference. Shehu Gabam, the National Chairman of the SDP, emphasized the judiciary's critical role, stating, "The judiciary is the last hope of the common man if it still stands." He called on the judiciary to exercise caution in its decisions, especially in recent developments in states like Zamfara, Nasarawa, Kano, and Plateau.

Gabam stressed that the coalition focuses not on a merger or opposition to the Inter-Party Advisory Council. Speaking on behalf of the PDP, Setonji Koshoedo, the acting national secretary, highlighted that the coalition aims to provide a robust opposition force.

Echoing these sentiments, Chief Ralph Nwosu, the national chairman of the ADC, explained that the coalition seeks to strengthen democracy in the face of attempts to stifle viable opposition by those in government. The coalition emphasizes the importance of a judiciary that delivers internationally recognized judgments free from political influence.

Reject Tinubu’s 2024 Budget, PDP Tells N’Assembly

More reactions on the budget as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) condemned the rendition of President Bola Tinubu’s campaign tune on the floor of the national assembly during the presentation of the 2024 budget.

After his presentation, lawmakers stood up as a symbol of respect, but the band was heard playing a popular song, his supporters’ anthem, during his campaign in the build-up to the election.

In a statement, the opposition party described the incident as an extremely sacrilegious and unpardonable assault by President Tinubu and his handlers on the sensibility and constitutional sovereignty of the Nigerian people as represented by the National Assembly.

It noted that the National Assembly is the symbol of the collective sovereignty of the Nigerian people, which cannot be appropriated by or surrendered to any individual under any guise or circumstance whatsoever.

The PDP also described the N27.5 trillion budget, as proposed by President Tinubu, as deceitful, strangulating, and hopeless.

Ologunagba declared that the budget is predicated and expected to be funded by multilateral and bilateral foreign loans and increased taxes on Nigerians.

NNPP Applauds Atiku, Welcomes Merger Of Opposition Parties

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has described it as a welcome development, following former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's proposal that opposition parties merge to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election.

At a press conference in Abuja, the Acting National Chairman of the party, Abba Ali, said the merger of opposition parties before the 2015 elections led to the defeat of the then-ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) by the APC.

ALI stated that the NNPP sees the call from the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, as patriotic, for which it unreservedly commends him.

He restated the party’s earlier stance that, while it fully embraces the initiative and applauds it as a matter of necessity, it looks at it from a much larger perspective and considers all factors inherent in it.
