Ogun State Police Arrest Two Pupils For Setting School On Fire

The Ogun State Police Command announced on Sunday that it had apprehended two minors in connection with a destructive incident at a school in the Isheri-Olofin area of Ifo Local Government Area.

According to the command's spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the children, aged six and nine, both residing in the Isheri Olofin community, were responsible for setting fire to their school and damaging school property on October 29, 2023.

The incident came to light when a community leader reported the matter to the police. As per the report, the youngsters gained access to an unlocked classroom at Community Primary School Isheri Olofin, where they collected books left behind by teachers and fellow students and set them ablaze. The extent of the damage to the books is presently unknown.

Upon receiving the report, the Anti-Crime and Detectives Unit promptly visited the scene and brought the young suspects to the police station for questioning. Odutola also mentioned that the parents of the minors would be summoned for questioning to ascertain the circumstances that led to their children's actions.

She emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "This is a very serious crime for these children to get themselves involved with." The police are actively working to locate the parents and will keep the public updated if any other individuals may have played a role in influencing the children's actions.

The police will continue their inquiries and keep the public informed as they progress in this case.

Presidential Election: PEPC Admits Atiku, PDP’s Documents Against Tinubu’s Victory

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its Presidential candidate in the February 25, 2023 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar yesterday tendered documents in their joint petition challenging the declaration of Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the election.

The documents included, Certified True Copies of the print out of Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS), in respect of 33 states of the Federation with the exception of Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Lagos state.

Other documents tendered were Certified True Copies of form EC8 As, for Abia state, Bayelsa, Kaduna and Ogun states, which were duly certified by INEC.

The PDP prayed the court to deem the documents as read pursuant to provisions of paragraph 46(a) of the first schedule of the Electoral Act.Having tendered the documents, the Chairman of the court, Justice Haruna Tsammani, admitted them as evidence.

Speaking after the proceedings, PDP’s counsel Chris Uchesaid, after pushing the documents they will proceed to call witnesses.

Meanwhile, the Petition of Labour Party and its Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, could not be heard due to ill health of two Key staff in the Secretariat of the party.

Counsel to Obi and the LP, Awa Kalu, made this known at the resumed hearing of the case.

He asked for an adjournment to today, June 1, for continuation.

The five-man panel of Justices led by Justice Haruna Tsammani subsequently adjourned hearing of their petition to today, June 1.

President Buhari Condemns Violent Attacks Against Policemen, Ethnic Minorities Across Nigeria

President MUHAMMADU BUHARI has condemned the rise in ritual killings and deadly attacks against policemen and ethnic minorities with the latest incidents reported in Enugu, Imo, Abia, Zamfara and Ogun states.

According to President BUHARI, incidents of ritual killings, hate crimes and killing of law enforcement officers are an aberration.

This was contained a statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, GARBA SHEHU.

In expressing the sympathy of the nation to families of all victims of such killings, President BUHARI urged law enforcement agencies, state governments, local authorities, community and religious leaders to take all lawful actions to prevent further incidents of such nature.

Meanwhile, President BUHARI has commended Abia State Government for the actions it took in response to an attack on traders at the New Cattle Market in the Ukwa Local Government Area of the state a few days ago.

A candidate from Lagos State, Monwuba Chibuikem, has emerged as the overall best candidate at the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination with a top score of 358.

The information was contained in a document shared by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board at its policy meeting held on Tuesday.

According to the document, Qomarudeen Alabi from Osun and Adeogun Oreoluwa from Ogun jointly came second as they both scored 350.

Ajayi Isaiah from Lagos took the fourth position with a score of 349 while Okarike Kenneth from Rivers  came fifth with 348.

The trio of Omonona Victor, Owoeye Oluwatimilehin, and Ehizogie Aidelogie cane sixth with 347 while Ajeigbe Samuel and Yakubu Joshua (Edo) had 346 and 343 respectively to complete the top 10.

A breakdown of the top 10 candidates by their states of origin showed Lagos, Edo and Ekiti had the highest with two students each while Osun, Oyo, Ogun and Rivers had one each.

The gender composition of the top 10 candidates also revealed that the list had nine males with only one female making it.
