NMA Threatens Strike, Gives January 31 Deadline

The Nigerian Medical Association has given the Federal Government till January 31, 2024, to meet its demands or risk industrial action in the health sector.

The NMA President, Uche Ojinmah, issued the request at a press briefing after the association’s National Executive Council meeting in Abuja.

The NMA also asked the government to implement the upward review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure.

Ojinmah stated that the association cannot guarantee industrial harmony after the request if the government fails to meet its demands.

He also urged the government to implement the newly approved accruement allowance with arrears from June 2022.

Ojinmah added that while the association was grateful that the government had taken a step regarding one of its agreements, it awaited the full implementation of the agreements they had.

NMA Blames Past Leadership Of Resident Doctors For Ongoing Strike

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), has attributed the ongoing strike by the National Association of Residents Doctors which has entered its 58th day to the uncooperative attitude of the immediate past leadership of NARD.

The President of the NMA, Prof Innocent Ujah, said this while leading the newly elected leadership of NARD to a meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, in Abuja.

The Deputy Director, Press and Public Relations in the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Charles Akpan, disclosed this in a statement titled, ‘NMA blames former NARD leadership for the lingering.’

Uja reportedly said, “I’m here with the newly elected officers of NARD. They came to me and we had a meeting, a very cordial, meaningful interaction. And after that, I told them that I had secured an appointment to introduce them to you (labour minister) which I thought should be private but even if it goes on CNN, it means we have opened a new chapter, a very positive chapter because a chapter can be bad".

NMA, NARD Blame Ngige For Prolonged Strike

The Nigerian Medical Association and the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors have blamed the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, for the prolonged strike by resident doctors.

The NMA’s General Secretary, Philips Ekpe; and the Vice President of NARD, Arome Adejo, made the position of their groups known in separate interviews in Abuja.

The NARD had on August 2 begun a nationwide strike over the alleged failure of the Federal Government to pay doctors on residency training and integrate members of the association into the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System.

Ngige, in an interview with State House correspondents, claimed that the Federal Government did not owe any doctors, but the illegally employed ones.

NMA Threatens To Join Doctors Strike, Gives FG 21-Day Ultimatum

The Federal Government has expressed concern about the 21-day strike notice issued by the Nigerian Medical Association over the alleged failure of government to meet the demands of the striking National Association of Resident Doctors.

The Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, while reacting to the threat by the NMA, said doctors should stop embarking on strikes at dangerous times and appealed to them to call off their strike.

The health minister said doctors should not be seen to be going on strikes at a time when the citizens were facing dangerous threats to lives.

Efforts by the NMA to resolve the disagreements between NARD and the government have so far failed.
