FG Has Fulfilled 90% Of Agreement With Labour — Minister

The Minister of Labour, Nkiruka Onyejeocha, has reported significant progress in fulfilling the agreements made with organized labor last October, stating that the Federal Government has achieved approximately 90 percent of these commitments.

Regarding the provision of high-capacity CNG buses for mass transit in Nigeria, the Minister confirmed that funds have been disbursed for this purpose. However, she emphasized that the availability of these buses takes time due to their assembly process.

Among the agreements reached with Labour, the Minister highlighted the implementation of a wage award of 35,000 naira for workers, the establishment of a minimum wage committee, and the temporary suspension of value-added tax (VAT) collection on diesel for six months.

During a monitored program, the labor minister urged Nigerians to exhibit understanding and patience, noting that the government has made significant strides in fulfilling its commitments to Labour.

Furthermore, she underscored the administration's priorities under President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing food security and economic prosperity as key areas of focus.

Seyi Makinde Participates in NLC Protest in Oyo State

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde joined the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress in a peaceful protest on Tuesday.

The workers initiated their protest from the NLC state secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan, and proceeded to the Gate, NTA, and Yemetu roundabouts, where Governor Makinde joined them.

During the demonstration, Governor Makinde reassured the protesters that the current challenges would soon be addressed. He expressed awareness of the hardships faced by the people and emphasized his commitment to being part of the solution.

Governor Makinde stated, "I am aware of the hardship in town and the difficulty the people are going through, but I will be part of the generation that will fix the country." He also pledged to ensure that the workers' letters of protest and grievances would reach President Bola Tinubu.

Prior to the governor's involvement, the state NLC Chairman, Kayode Martins, highlighted the unbearable cost of living, particularly for the average citizen. He emphasized the frustration felt by the populace, stating, "The cost of living in Nigeria today is nothing to write home about, and the people are fed up, so that's why we are on the street now."

NLC Vows To Go Ahead With Rallies, Accuses FG Of Plotting Attacks

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has insisted that its planned protests scheduled for today, Tuesday and Wednesday, over “mounting hunger and insecurity” in Nigeria will go on.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, stated this in a statement, just as he accused the Federal Government of allegedly trying to use an amorphous group, the Nigeria Civil Society Forum (NCSF), to attack its members during the rallies.

The Number One Unionist vowed to ensure a total shutdown of Nigeria through the withdrawal of services by workers if any of its members are attacked during the protest.

It would be recalled that the Department of State Services (DSS), has warned that the planned protest may be hijacked, and this has been reinforced by the Police, and a Presidential Media Aide, Bayo Onanuga.

This was as the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), warned that embarking on the rallies would be contempt of court.

On February 16, the NLC announced the nationwide protest over the alleged government’s failure to implement agreements reached between with the Labour on October 2, 2023, following the removal of the fuel subsidy.

The decision followed the conclusion of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government to implement measures against the widespread hardship.

Most Govs In Review Committee Not Paying Minimum Wage

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero, has criticised the committee set up by the federal government to fashion out a new national minimum wage for the country, stating that most governors of the committee are guilty of not complying with the proposed base pay structure.

Vice President Kashim Shettima inaugurated the 37-member committee in Abuja yesterday, saying the decision aimed to ensure a decent living wage and comply with the existing National Minimum Wage Act of 2019, which will expire in a few months.

Speaking on a monitored program, Ajaero said governors who fully comply with the minimum wage are not adequately represented on the committee.

He questioned the motive of the federal government to bring in those who are not compliant to form the bulk of the membership of the minimum wage committee.

The NLC president also criticised the state of the economy, noting that the Labour Congress is helpless in solving the issue.
