Pep Guardiola Has Been Named Premier League Manager of the Year

Pep Guardiola has been elected Premier League Manager of the Season for 2022/23.
Guardiola has won the accolade four times in his seven seasons at the Etihad Stadium.

The Spanish coach beat out Mikel Arteta of Arsenal, Roberto De Zerbi of Brighton, Unai Emery of Aston Villa, Eddie Howe of Newcastle United, and Marco Silva of Fulham to win the honor.

Guardiola led City to their third Premier League title in a row and fifth in six years, as well as berths in the FA Cup and Champions League finals.

Following a 12-game winning streak, City won the title with three matches to spare after trailing Arsenal for much of the season.

Guardiola also received the trophy after winning the league title in 2017/18, 2018/19, and 2020/21.

He is only the second manager in Premier League history, behind Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester United, to have won more than three awards.

Arsenal’s Top Four Hopes Crushed At Newcastle

Arsenal’s hopes of finishing in the Premier League top four were dealt a huge blow as they were well beaten by Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Mikel Arteta’s side needed a win to move above Tottenham into fourth and put them in the driving seat to secure a Champions League spot heading into the final weekend of the season.

But they were second best throughout and fell behind early in the second half when Ben White turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Callum Wilson, who was making his first start since 27 December.

Bruno Guimaraes, who has become a cult hero since joining Newcastle at the start of this year, then rounded off the impressive win when he drove into the net as Arsenal struggled to clear.

Arsenal offered next to nothing, with Martin Dubravka only really tested once, with a 25-yard Mohamed Elneny shot in the second half.

Indeed, Newcastle could have won by more with Wilson coming so close to capping a dream return from injury with a stunning long-range effort that dropped just wide of the goal.

The result, which also confirmed Chelsea’s finish in the top four, means Arsenal must beat Everton in their final game of the season on Sunday and hope Tottenham lose at relegated Norwich.

Newcastle, meanwhile, round off a season that provides encouragement for the future with a trip to Burnley.

March 18, 2022 Alex Iwobi Fires Everton Past Newcastle United

Alex Iwobi Fires Everton Past Newcastle United

Alex Iwobi’s 99th-minute goal earned Everton a massive victory in their fight against relegation as they held on to beat Newcastle despite being reduced to 10 men.

An average game, which was delayed by a protestor tying himself to a goalpost by his neck, came to life late on when Allan was sent off with seven minutes remaining for taking out Newcastle substitute Allan Saint-Maximin.

Referee Craig Pawson consulted the pitchside monitor and overturned his initial decision to book the Everton midfielder.

At that stage, and with 14 minutes of stoppage time to play because of the protest, hanging on for a draw looked like the best Frank Lampard’s side could achieve.

Yet in the ninth minute of additional time, substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin led a breakaway and slipped Iwobi through before he found the bottom corner.

It led to wild celebrations at Goodison Park as Everton earned only their second win in 13 Premier League games to put three points between them and the relegation zone.

But, as Lampard and his players hugged each other in delight at the final whistle, it felt like a victory worth much more than that as they consigned Newcastle to a second consecutive defeat.

Eddie Howe Appointed Newcastle United Manager

Newcastle United have appointed Eddie Howe to succeed Steve Bruce as the Premier League club's head coach.

Howe, who has signed a contract until the summer of 2024, has not been in management since he left Bournemouth in August 2020 following relegation.

"This is a wonderful opportunity, but there is also a lot of work ahead of us," Howe told Newcastle's website.

He takes over with Newcastle 19th in the table, five points from safety after 11 games.

Howe watched Newcastle's 1-1 league draw at Brighton on Saturday from the stands.
