The NLC And TUC Have Threatened A Statewide Strike On November 14th

Following the kidnapping and attack of NLC President Joe Ajaero last week, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have threatened to halt economic operations nationwide beginning November 14.

The congresses have also ordered the immediate withdrawal of services and the closure of Imo State, which will begin at midnight today.

They asked employees and affiliates to comply and ordered that all flights into and out of Imo State, as well as fuel and electrical supply, be halted immediately.

Adewale Adeyanju, Deputy President of the National Labour Congress (NLC), and Festus Osifo, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), spoke at a combined National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja yesterday.

They stated that, in addition to the action in Imo, if all demands are not satisfied, workers across the federation will withdraw their services by Tuesday, November 14 at midnight.

During the discussion, the unions reviewed Ajaero’s kidnapping and the violence inflicted on him and other workers gathered in the NLC Imo State secretariat.

They claimed that the crimes were committed by the Imo State administration, with the governor’s approval and in coordination with the Nigeria Police.

They claimed that the decision to go on strike in Imo was made only in accordance with an earlier resolution.

According to the unions, the administration has regularly broken agreements, most notably the deal struck between the government and organized labour on January 9, 2021.

They claimed that the state owed them salary arrears and that some employees had been subjected to 20 months of unpaid wages after being unfairly classified as “ghost workers.”

NEC Urges Labour To Shelve Planned Strike, NUPENG Threatens To Halt Fuel Supply

The Federal Government has again urged the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to shelve its planned industrial action.

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, issued the appeal while briefing State House Correspondents shortly after the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

He urged the leadership of the organized labour to be patient with the Federal Government and give more time for dialogue.

Mutfwang disclosed that the welfare of Nigerian workers would form part of the issues President Bola Tinubu would address in his maiden Independence Day broadcast to Nigerians on Sunday.

This is coming three days after the leaders of the NLC and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) said they will commence an indefinite strike on Tuesday, October 3.

The Unions had earlier asked their state chapters to mobilize for protests across the country.

This was disclosed at the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The vice president’s spokesman, Laolu Akande, in a statement issued after the meeting, said each state would receive N18.225billion with a 30-year tenor, and a 2-year moratorium at an interest rate of 9%.

He said the facility was to help the states afford the repayment of previous bailout facilities guaranteed for them by the Federal Government.

He said the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Dr. Zainab Ahmed, informed the council that the Bridge Facility is now being processed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Akande said the approved bridge facility of N656.112billion would be disbursed in six tranches over a period of six months to the States.

NEC To Review Reports Of Judicial Panels Set Up By States To Resolve Issues Of #ENDSARS

Reports of the various judicial panels set up by states to resolve issues of police brutality are to be reviewed at a special session by the National Economic Council.

The panels were constituted by the states and the Federal Capital Territory following the #EndSARS protests that rocked state capitals and some major cities last year.

The protests led to loss of lives, destruction of private properties and public infrastructure.

Vice President and Chairman of Council YEMI OSINBAJO dropped the hint of plans to appraise the reports during the monthly NEC meeting.

The meeting, which held virtually, had in attendance governors, top government officials and the CBN Governor, GODWIN EMEFIELE.

According to a statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Office of the Vice President, Mr. LAOLU AKANDE, some states have submitted their reports to the NEC, adding that others were being awaited.
