Senate Urges Federal Government To Declare A State Of Emergency On Substance Abuse

In a pressing plea to the Federal Government, the Senate has urged immediate action to combat the escalating crisis of drug and narcotics abuse in Nigeria. The nation is grappling with a concerning surge in substance abuse, prompting the Senate to take swift action.

During a plenary session, the Senate discussed and passed a motion titled: "Immediate Intervention Required to Combat Drug Abuse in Nigeria." This motion was presented by Senator Babangida Uba Hussaini of the APC, representing Jigawa Northwest. The Senate emphasized the urgency of addressing the drug abuse crisis and its far-reaching consequences.

In response to this critical situation, the Red Chamber has mandated its National Agency for Administration Control, Drugs, and Narcotics committee to collaborate with relevant federal agencies to convene a National Summit focused on tackling the issue of drugs and narcotics abuse in the country. This initiative reflects the Senate's commitment to finding comprehensive solutions to this pressing problem.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed deep concern about the extent of drug abuse in the country, highlighting a shocking practice where some young individuals resort to inhaling vapours from soakaway pits to achieve a high. He urged parents to regularly inspect their soakaways to ensure they remain intact, emphasizing the importance of proactive measures to protect young people.

Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau emphasized the critical role that youth play in a nation's future. He underscored that when the youth are adversely affected by drug abuse, it poses a significant threat to the nation's prospects. Barau also pointed out that drug abuse is not limited to any particular segment of society; it affects people from all walks of life, including celebrities and politicians.

While acknowledging the efforts of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Barau called for heightened vigilance and coordinated efforts from all stakeholders responsible for addressing this grave issue. The Senate's call for a state of emergency reflects the gravity of the situation and the need for immediate and comprehensive action to combat drug and narcotics abuse in Nigeria.

NDLEA Intercepts Drug Consignments In Wooden Statue, Imported Vehicle

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted illicit drugs hidden in a wooden statue and imported vehicles.

In a statement, NDLEA Spokesperson, Femi Babafemi said the consignments were meant for export to the United Kingdom and United Arab Emirates.

They were found at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Ikeja and Tincan seaport in Lagos.

Babafemi said no less than 37.5 kilograms of such illicit consignments were intercepted in the past week.

Eleven persons were also arrested in interdiction operations that led to the seizure of almost four tons of skunk in Kaduna, Kano and Lagos.

He further said a similar attempt to ship 11.5kgs of the same substance to the UK was frustrated when the consignment concealed in a giant wooden sculpture was intercepted at a courier company in Lagos.

NDLEA Bursts Drug Cartel In Delta State, Arrests Baroness, Seals Bunkers

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has busted a drug warehouse owned by a cartel in Delta State and arrested the leader, BRIDGET EMEKA.

The drug warehouse is said to be located within a palatial mansion owned by the 59-year-old drug baroness.

The Director, Media & Advocacy at the NDLEA, FEMI BABAFEMI, said the drug baroness has been under surveillance for weeks after she was identified as a major distributor of illicit drugs in the South-South region.

The NDLEA spokesman, who said the baroness is the major distributor of illicit drugs in the South-South, was arrested in her mansion where she cooks and distributes Crack Cocaine, Methamphetamine and other illicit substances.

No fewer than nine of her staff and associates were also arrested in coordinated simultaneous operations at her expansive residence and drug bunker, where she accommodates drug users and sells illicit substances to them and others in parts of Warri, Delta State.

List Of Assets Abba Kyari Will Lose To NDLEA 

The federal government through the ministry of justice under Attorney-General Abubakar Malami has approved the request to seize assets belonging to the former commander, of Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team, DCP Abba Kyari. 

The request to confiscate Kyari's properties was made by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

An online source reports that the approval came from the office of AGF Malami on Monday, March 21.  It was gathered that assets of Kyari to be forfeited include:  Cash in bank accounts Vehicles Hotels, Personal houses, Commercial buildings, Wristwatches, Jewellery, Stocks,Bonds.

Confirming the decision of the AGF, an officer of the justice ministry said:

“The AGF has endorsed the request by the NDLEA seeking approval for the confiscation of the assets of Abba Kyari, Ubua, and the other police officers involved in drug dealing.

 With the approval, the drug agency can now go after their property such as real estate, bank accounts,   cash, vehicles, stocks, bonds and anything of monetary value.” 

The officer whose identity was not revealed noted that the seizure of the properties of Kyari and his co-accused was to ensure that they did not benefit from ill-gotten riches.
