NASS Screens Lauretta Onochie, Others For NDDC Roles

The Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Niger Delta have screened Special Assistant on Social Media to President Muhammadu Buhari, Lauretta Onochie, as Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Board.

Onochie was screened by the joint committees alongside 13 others for NDDC board roles.

However, there were reservations by some committee members against her nomination notably on the grounds that she is not from an oil-producing community in Delta State where she hails from, which is against the NDDC Act.

A committee member, Senator Seriake Dickson, noted this during the screening exercise.

However, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele differed with Dickson, arguing that his claim is not explicitly stated in the NDDC Act.

This is the second time President BUHARI forwarded a list of nominees for the NDDC board for confirmation.

SERAP Slams President Buhari With Lawsuit Over Non-Disclosure Of N6trn NDDC Fund Looters

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against President Muhammadu Buhari over alleged financial misappropriation within the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

This was contained in a lawsuit filed by SERAP lawyers Kolawole Oluwadare and Opeyemi Owolabi, at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

According to the Organisation, this suit is due to the failure of President BUHARI “to publish the names of those indicted in the alleged misappropriation of over N6 trillion in the running of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) between 2000 and 2019, as documented in the recent Forensic Audit Report on NDDC.

SERAP also sought “an order of mandamus to direct and compel President BUHARI to publish the names of those indicted in the alleged misappropriation of over N6trn in the running of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) between 2000 and 2019.

The suit, which has been assigned to Justice Binta Nyako at Court 2, is fixed for hearing on 29th November 2021.

FG: NDDC Has 362 Bank Accounts Without Proper Reconciliation

The federal government has said it is worried and alarmed that over 13,777 projects being handled by the Niger Delta Development Commission has their execution “substantially compromised.”

It also said that the commission has about 362 bank accounts that lack proper reconciliation.

The Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, made this known in Abuja after receiving the forensic audit report of the NDDC from the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio.

President Buhari had, in 2019, ordered a forensic audit of the NDDC’s operations from 2001 to 2019.

Acting MD, NDDC Faints During Probe

The Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Prof DANIEL PONDEI appeared to have fainted as the House of Representatives committee on NDDC grilled him.

The committee is in its fourth day of public hearing, as it investigates alleged financial misappropriation at the agency.

PONDEI had been grilled for almost an hour but could not withstand the pressure coming from members of the committee before he passed out.

Several people present at the hearing rushed to his aid, propping him up and attempting to stabilise him, with the proceedings halted.

The development led to the session adjourned for 30-minutes.

Earlier, the chairman of the committee, OLUBUNMI TUNJI-OJO in his opening remarks said, no one has been indicted adding the forum was for everyone invited to clear their names.

He therefore recused himself from the committee for the Deputy Chairman, THOMAS EREYITOMI to step in.
