Ex-NBA Star Jeremy Lin Banned For Five Games In Taiwan

Jeremy Lin, the former NBA champion known for his remarkable career with the Toronto Raptors in 2019, has been suspended for five games by Taiwan’s P. League+ for breaching anti-doping regulations related to blood treatment for an injury. Additionally, Lin has been fined NT$150,000 ($5,000) for the violation.

The 35-year-old guard gained global recognition during his time with the New York Knicks in 2012, leading the team to a seven-game winning streak and igniting the phenomenon known as “Linsanity.” Born to Taiwanese immigrant parents in the United States, Lin made his debut in Taiwan’s P. League+ last year, currently playing for the New Taipei Kings.

Lin's treatment for an injury involved a form of blood irradiation therapy, which contravenes regulations set by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), as stated by the league in an official statement. Although investigations revealed that the therapy was arranged by the team and did not involve the use of banned substances, it was deemed non-compliant with WADA rules.

In response, Lin’s team issued an apology, clarifying that the treatment was solely intended to facilitate his injury recovery and not to enhance performance. The New Taipei Kings expressed regret, admitting they were unaware that the treatment violated WADA regulations, as it is legal according to Taiwan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Lin, an alumnus of Harvard University, embarked on his NBA journey in 2010 with the Golden State Warriors, subsequently playing for various teams including the Knicks, Raptors, Houston Rockets, LA Lakers, and Charlotte Hornets throughout his career.

Slain Abducted Teenager’s Father Calls For NBA’s Intervention

Father of the slain 13-year-old Folashade Ariyo, who kidnappers killed, Oladosu Ariyo, has called on the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), under the leadership of Yakubu Maikyau, to intervene in the rescue of the rest of his family.

The kidnappers had killed three of 11 residents of the Sagwari Estate Layout in the Dutsen-Alhaji area of the Federal Capital Territory, where the kidnappers had abducted Folasade, along with three of her siblings and her mother.

The kidnappers invaded the Sagwari community on Sunday, January 7, at about 7:30 p.m., dressed as military men, and kidnapped 11 residents, including a mother and her four children, and a receptionist and barman from a nearby hotel.

Meanwhile, the kidnappers, who cited delays in paying the demanded N60 million ransom for each of the victims, have now reportedly increased their demand for the families of the remaining 11 victims to pay N100 million ransom for each one of the victims.

In a post on his X handle, Ariyo, who stated that he is a lawyer, narrated that the kidnappers killed his 13-year-old daughter despite having raised 7 million naira of the earlier demanded N60 million, which the kidnappers refused to collect.

He added that the kidnappers were threatening to kill his wife and his three remaining children, who were minors and were still in captivity, and lamented the failure of the government to end the insecurity in the country.

Falana Leads Protest As Lagos Lawyers Demand Probe Of Colleague’s Assault

Renowned human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, took part in a demonstration alongside fellow legal professionals in Lagos, protesting against police brutality directed at lawyers and citizens. The catalyst for the protest was the recent detention of Olumide Sonupe, a lawyer based in Lagos, who had been held by the police at Gowon Estate Police Station for two days.

Sonupe's ordeal, during which a police officer allegedly assaulted him during negotiations, resulted in his hospitalisation on December 30, 2023. Responding to this incident and other reported cases of harassment and assault by the Nigerian police, hundreds of lawyers gathered at the bar centre of the Nigerian Bar Association (Ikeja branch). From there, they peacefully marched to the headquarters of the Lagos State Police Command.

During a press briefing in Ikeja, Falana explained that representatives from the five branches of the NBA in Lagos had met with the state police commissioner, Adegoke Fayoade. The commissioner assured them that a comprehensive investigation had been initiated into the Olumide Sonupe incident.

"Lagos State lawyers united today to protest against police brutality, prompted by the recent mistreatment of one of our colleagues," Falana declared. "Through him, we are making a stand that Nigerian lawyers and citizens will no longer tolerate the brutalisation of legal practitioners and the general populace. The NBA advocates for a thorough investigation into the incident at the police station, and fortunately, the commissioner of police announced today that an in-depth inquiry is already underway."

Originally intending to submit their petition against police brutality to Commissioner Fayoade, the lawyers found that the commissioner had learned of their planned protest. Commissioner Fayoade appeared at the bar centre before the protest to address their concerns, engaging in dialogue with the lawyers. Despite initial resistance to his presence, the lawyers, under Falana's guidance, permitted him to address the gathering before submitting their letter of protest.

Nevertheless, led by Femi Falana and the chairpersons of all five branches of the NBA in Lagos, the lawyers proceeded with the protest, vocalising solidarity songs to express their discontent with the behaviour of the police.

NBA Fines James Harden $100,000 For Threat To Skip 76ers Games

The NBA has fined James Harden $100,000 for saying he would not play for the Philadelphia 76ers while President Daryl Morey was in charge.

In an interview, the guard called Morey a "liar" after reports the 76ers had ended talks about trading him.

Harden, 33, was keen to join the LA Clippers before talks faltered.

The NBA said the fine was for saying "he would not perform the services called for under his player contract unless traded to another team".

In response, the National Basketball Players Association said: "We respectfully disagree with the league's decision to discipline James Harden for recent comments he made, which we believe do not violate the rule against public trade demands.

"We intend to file a grievance and have the matter heard by our Arbitrator."

The fine relates to comments made by Harden on 14 and 17 August, when he threatened to strike by refusing to play for the 76ers over their refusal to trade him.

The NBA added: "The league's investigation, which included an interview of Harden, confirmed that these comments referenced Harden's belief that the 76ers would not accommodate his request to be traded."

Harden made the controversial comments about Morey on 14 August during a promotional event in China.

Harden was named the NBA's Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 2018 while playing for the Houston Rockets, where Morey was general manager.

Harden helped the 76ers, alongside reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid, to last season's Eastern Conference semi-finals, where they lost to rivals Boston Celtics after blowing a 3-2 lead in the series.
