Over 1,100 Killed In Israel, Gaza

In the early hours of Monday, Israel continued its relentless assault on the Gaza Strip amid ongoing fighting with Hamas, pushing the death toll from the conflict with Palestinian militants to over 1,100.

During overnight clashes, the Israeli army reported striking more than 500 targets in the besieged and impoverished Gaza Strip. At the same time, skirmishes persisted in seven to eight locations inside Israel near the enclave.

This escalation followed a massive attack by Hamas just two days prior when they launched a barrage of rockets and sent fighters into Israel, resulting in the deaths of civilians and the abduction of at least 100 hostages—an action that caught Israel by surprise. Consequently, the Israeli government officially declared war on the Palestinian militant group that controls Gaza.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a sobering warning to Israel, urging the nation to prepare for a "long and difficult" conflict. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed that over 700 Israelis have lost their lives since the launch of Hamas's large-scale attack, with another 1,200 people critically wounded.

In retaliation, Israeli airstrikes continued to pound the densely populated and blockaded Gaza Strip, home to 2.3 million people, resulting in at least 413 Palestinian fatalities. The IDF revealed that overnight, fighter jets, helicopters, aircraft, and artillery targeted more than 500 sites affiliated with Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Gaza.

Military spokesperson Richard Hecht informed reporters that combat operations were ongoing, with Israeli forces engaged in battles against terrorists in seven to eight locations around Gaza. He expressed hope for regaining full control by the end of the day, although the situation remained fluid.

As thick plumes of smoke billowed from the Palestinian enclave, the conflict showed no signs of abating. Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus, an army spokesman, estimated that approximately 1,000 Palestinian militants participated in Hamas's Saturday assault—an event he described as "by far the worst day in Israeli history." He emphasised the unprecedented scale of casualties, likening it to "a 9/11 and a Pearl Harbor wrapped into one."

To address the crisis, Israel deployed around 100,000 reserve troops to the southern regions as they continued their efforts to expel Hamas fighters from Israeli territory. Additionally, Conricus reported that a "very large number" of Israeli civilians and soldiers remained held inside Gaza, underscoring the complexity and urgency of the situation.

Tinubu Seeks Nine-Month Transition For Niger Junta

President Bola Tinubu has suggested that nine months is enough for the Niger military junta to return the country to civilian rule after seizing power from President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26.

The President said this when he received the Nigeria Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), led by the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Third, at the State House, Abuja.

According to the Nigerian leader, who is also the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), if Nigeria could successfully return to democracy in 1999 through a nine-month programme by General Abdulsalami Abubakar, the Niger coup leaders could do so too.

In a statement by his Spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu said sanctions imposed on Niger Republic won’t be lifted without “positive adjustments” by the military junta.

The Niger coupists have said they need a three-year transition period to restore constitutional order in the country, a position ECOWAS rejected.

With the coup in Gabon on Wednesday, Tinubu said his fears that other countries will copy what happened in Niger was confirmed.

Speaking later after the visit, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, explained the reason for the visit.

A member of the NSCIA delegation and JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishak Oloyede, also spoke.

Gabon Coup Update: Military Officers Take Control, Terminate Bongo’s 53-Year Rule

On Wednesday, army officers have appeared on national television in Gabon to announce they have taken over power in the Central African country.

They said they were annulling the results of Saturday’s election, in which President Ali Bongo was declared the winner.

The soldiers who introduced themselves as members of the CTRI (The Committee of Transition and Restoration of Institutions) said, “We have decided to defend peace by putting an end to the regime in power.”

The electoral commission said Bongo’s main challenger, Albert Ondo Ossa, had come in second place with 30.77%. Bongo’s team have rejected Ondo Ossa’s allegations of electoral irregularities.

His overthrow would end his family’s 53-year hold on power in Gabon.

Bongo has been in power for 14 years in the oil-rich West African country. He was first elected in 2009 following the death of his father, Omar Bongo Ondimba, who had ruled the country for 41 years.

Before polls closed on Saturday, Ondo Ossa had accused Bongo of “fraud” while claiming he was the rightful winner.

While announcing the cancellation of the vote results, one of the officers said “all the institutions of the republic” had been dissolved.

The full statement reads,

“Our beautiful country, Gabon, has always been a haven of peace. The country is going through a serious institutional, political, economic and social crisis. We are therefore forced to admit that the organisation of the general elections of 26 August 2023 did not meet the conditions for a transparent, credible and inclusive ballot so much hoped for by the people of Gabon”

Added to this is irresponsible and unpredictable governance, resulting in a continuing deterioration in social cohesion, with the risk of leading the country into chaos.

“Today, 30 August 2023, we — the defence and security forces, gathered as the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI) on behalf of the people of Gabon and as guarantors of the institutions’ protection — have decided to defend peace by putting an end to the current regime.

“The borders are closed until further notice! The Republic's institutions are dissolved: the government, the Senate, the National Assembly, the Constitutional Court, the Economic, Social and Environmental Council and the Gabonese Elections Centre”.

“We call for calm and serenity from the public, the communities of sister countries settled in Gabon, and the Gabonese diaspora. We reaffirm our commitment to respecting Gabon’s commitments to the national and international community”.

“People of Gabon, we are finally on the road to happiness. May God and the spirits of our ancestors bless Gabon—honour and loyalty to our homeland”.

“Thank you.”
