Dozens Die After Bus Falls Off Bridge In Mali

Thirty-one people have died, and at least ten have been injured, while some sustained serious injuries after a bus flipped over and plunged off a bridge in Mali.

The bus had been en route to neighboring Burkina Faso from the Malian town of Kenieba when it veered off a bridge crossing the Bagoe River.

Local officials said the likely cause was "the driver's failure to control the vehicle."

Elsewhere in Africa, the authorities in Chad have said the country's delayed presidential elections will take place in May.

The vote is supposed to mark the end of a political transition that began in 2021 when former President Idriss Déby died after three decades in power, and in defiance of the Constitution, his son, General Mahamat Déby, was named his successor and promised to return the country to civilian rule.

Ortom signs N179.5b appropriation bill into law

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom signed into law on Thursday the N179.5 billion appropriation bill passed by the Benue State House of Assembly on Wednesday.

The fiscal estimate passed by the House includes N106 billion in recurrent expenditure and N73.5 billion in capital expenditure.

Signing the bill, the Governor acknowledged the Benue Assembly’s support, which he said accounted for his government’s successes in all sectors.

He said, “I must also commend the House for the speedy passage of the bill which is the last by our government. We thank the lawmakers for the cooperation we have been enjoying from the legislature which helped us record successes despite the security challenges posed to our state by armed herdsmen from Senegal, Niger, Mali, Central African Republic, Cameroon and others.”

He stated that the Assembly’s various laws became instruments for good governance, peace, and security in the state, emphasizing that the much-loved Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law of 2017 would go down in history as one of the laws that distinguished the state.

African Union Suspends Mali, Warns Of Sanctions

Mali has been suspended from the African Union following last week's military coup - the second in nine months.

The first was last August following a military coup - but the country was reinstated after the heads of a civilian-led transitional government were announced.

Now that administration has been overthrown, once again, Mali finds itself excluded.

The AU in a statement called for a return to civilian government saying it would not hesitate to impose sanctions and other punitive measures unless troops were urgently ordered to return to barracks, according from the union.

Colonel ASSIMI GOITA, who led the coup, was appointed transitional president by the country's constitutional court four days ago.
