Lauretta Onochie: Arresting Peter Obi Won’t Cause Disaster

Former Chairperson of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mrs. Lauretta Onochie, has urged authorities to investigate and potentially arrest Labour Party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Onochie alleges that Obi is playing a role in inciting violence following the 2023 presidential election.

Expressing her concerns via her X account in response to a video shared by Abubakar Sidiq Usman, Onochie calls on both the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police to take action. She questions the intensity of Obi's pursuit of the presidency, particularly given his third-place finish in the election.

Onochie contends that since the declaration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Obi's running mate, Dr. Datti Baba Ahmed, and others she describes as 'unpatriotic angry birds,' have allegedly been attempting to incite youth towards violence. She commends the majority of Nigerian youth for choosing to remain sensible and peaceful.

Furthermore, Onochie asserts that Obi's pursuit of legal action through the tribunal and attempts to use the Labour movement to obstruct the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal demonstrate his desperation. She questions Obi's relentless quest for power despite finishing third in the race.

In conclusion, Onochie insists that it is imperative for authorities to thoroughly investigate Peter Obi's alleged involvement in inciting violence. She emphasizes that holding him accountable will not lead to catastrophic consequences.

NASS Screens Lauretta Onochie, Others For NDDC Roles

The Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Niger Delta have screened Special Assistant on Social Media to President Muhammadu Buhari, Lauretta Onochie, as Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Board.

Onochie was screened by the joint committees alongside 13 others for NDDC board roles.

However, there were reservations by some committee members against her nomination notably on the grounds that she is not from an oil-producing community in Delta State where she hails from, which is against the NDDC Act.

A committee member, Senator Seriake Dickson, noted this during the screening exercise.

However, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele differed with Dickson, arguing that his claim is not explicitly stated in the NDDC Act.

This is the second time President BUHARI forwarded a list of nominees for the NDDC board for confirmation.

“We Studied The Mood Of Nigerians,” Says Senator As Factor In Rejecting Lauretta Onochie

President Muhammadu Buhari's social media aide, Lauretta Onochie, was rejected as a potential commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), partly because most Nigerians were vehemently opposed to her getting the job.

Onochie's nomination was widely condemned because of her partisanship, which she denied.

Onochie's nomination had been heavily criticized online because of her open partisanship and her public defense of the obnoxious policies of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to the Chairman of the Senate Committee on INEC, Senator Kabiru Gaya, the pushback from Nigerians online and the widespread criticism that greeted Onochie's nomination by the president, played a role in the legislature not clearing her for the job on Tuesday, July 13, 2021.

“We studied the mood of Nigerians," Gaya said, before chipping in the federal character principle violation that was officially cited by the senate during plenary.

There is a possibility of Onochie getting re-nominated by Buhari for the same role, when the tenure of Agbamuche-Mbu, Delta's current representative at INEC, expires in December.
