Lagos Govt Kickstarts Structural Tests On 3 Bridges

The Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory (LSMTL) has begun integrity tests on Eko, Ijora and Marine Bridges in Lagos.

Mr Olufunsho Elulade, General Manager of LSMTL, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the checks on the three bridges were to determine their structural stability to prevent collapse.

According to him, the checks were requested by contractors handling rehabilitation works on the facilities.

He explained that samples were being taken from the bridges to test and ascertain if previous fires that gutted them at various times weakened any of their components or not.

He explained the technicalities behind the various tests to ensure that the bridges were safe for use.

“Our input is very key because it would be based on our recommendation and the solution we proffer; that is what they (contractor) would do.

“So, as I speak, we are testing three bridges because the contractor just felt he would rather come to Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory because of their integrity, we work conscientiously and we have expertise.

“I have builders, geologists, civil engineers, materials engineers, name it. So, the expertise is there. The worst case scenario, it will come to me, I am a COREN registered engineer, a civil engineer and project manager with 30 years experience.

“So, whatever it is, we will fix. We are testing three bridges, Ijora Causeway, Eko Bridge and Marine Bridge in Apapa; work is ongoing and we started on Monday, February 28th and we have 14 days, so we are working through the 14 days,” he said.

According to him, the results from the laboratory would determine the advice to be given concerning the bridges.

Waste Management: Lagos Govt Uses N2bn To Rehabilitate Dumpsites – Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday said that it had invested over N2 billion towards the rehabilitation of dumpsites across the state for effective waste management.

Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, made this known during the unveiling of 102 new compactor trucks and 100 double dino bins at Lagos House, Ikeja.

Sanwo-Olu said that the state government remained determined to rewrite the narrative of waste management in Lagos State for the better.

He said that in the administration’s governing agenda, encapsulated as T.H.E.M.E.S, solid waste management represented a crucial cog of the Health and Environment pillar.

On assumption of office two years ago, one of the first things I did was visit the Olusosun Landfill in Ojota. This visit was not accidental. We were and still remain determined to rewrite the narrative of waste management in Lagos State, for the better.

”This determination has seen us already invest more than N2 billion towards the rehabilitation of dumpsites across our state.

”Another N1 billion is currently being invested in the construction of three new transfer loading stations to provide the necessary infrastructure to facilitate the effective delivery of solid waste management services,” Sanwo-Olu said.

According to him, his administration’s promise is to empower the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to effectively drive the elimination of waste accumulation in Lagos and adoption of recycling state-wide.

He said that the government was thinking beyond the basics of waste collection and disposal, as it was equally focused on permanently changing the habits and mindsets of residents regarding the management of waste.

Sanwo-Olu said that the government was inculcating a culture of responsible usage and of sorting and recycling among the residents.

”We are also fully aware of the potential of the waste economy. Our waste-to-wealth plan is taking shape, as we are rehabilitating the compost facility in Odogunyan, Ikorodu and will be unveiling more projects/programmes in the coming months,” he said.

The governor charged the residents to take responsibility for the waste they generate.

According to him, residents cannot continue to litter the roads, dump waste on the roadside or in illegal dumpsites or patronise cart-pushers for waste disposal.

”It has been said that one definition of insanity is doing the same thing and yet expecting a different result.

”We cannot be irresponsible in our waste handling and disposal behaviour and somehow expect that we will be spared the consequences of irresponsibility.

”As we are all aware, there is renewed emphasis and global focus on the threat of Climate Change. Lagos being a densely built-up low-lying coastal state is particularly vulnerable, especially to flooding.

”This calls for a wholesale change of attitude towards our environment, beginning with basic hygiene at home, proper domestic waste management and ultimately, environment-friendly practices.

”The quality of our environment directly impacts the quality of the lives we live. A clean environment is a major weapon against COVID-19 and other public health challenges,” he said.

Lagos Govt Demolishes Shanties On Lekki Coastal Road

Lagos government has demolished all shanties and illegal structures on Lekki coastal road which serves as alternative to Lekki-Epe route.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the demolition was carried out after a three-day removal notice had reportedly been issued to affected persons.

Chairman of the State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Task Force), CSP Shola Jejeloye, confirmed the demolition in a statement issued by Head, Public Affairs of the unit, Mr Femi Moliki, on Sunday in Lagos.

According to Jejeloye, the task force is prepared to monitor and prevent future encroachments and illegal occupation of any part of Lekki coastal road.

The chairman said that the exercise was carried out to give way for the construction of the coastal road, linking Lekki to the Free Trade Zone.

The road, he said, would also serve as an alternative route to Lekki–Epe expressway, to enhance free flow of traffic on the corridor.

”We have enlightened the occupants on the strategic nature of the road where they had built their shanties."

"Immediately it was cleared in 2019, they mobilised themselves and extended their occupation of the road."

”They have turned it into hideouts for criminals. They sell drugs, some of which were seized during our assessment of the area, while traffic robbers and other dangerous criminals also dwell here.

”These cannot be allowed to thrive in Lekki. The essence of the demolition is to monitor the place and safeguard it so that criminals don’t return there again,’’ he said.

Jejeloye expressed the state government’s commitment to decongesting Lekki– Epe expressway, hence the need to open up the road for residents and other law-abiding people to use.

NAN reports that the state government had, on July 26, announced the identification of illegal structures and abandoned vehicles on Lekki/Ajah coastal road.

It noted that the illegal structures and abandoned vehicles were serving as hideouts for robbers operating in traffic.

Government had also given owners of such illegal structures and abandoned vehicles in the area three days, starting from July 26, to remove them.
