11 Students From Top Kenyan University Killed In Bus Crash

A tragic collision between a university bus and a truck on a rain-soaked highway in Kenya has claimed the lives of 11 students from Kenyatta University and left 42 others seriously injured, according to authorities.

The accident occurred around 5:50 pm local time on Monday, near Maungu, approximately 360 kilometers (220 miles) from Nairobi, as the students were en route to Mombasa, a coastal town. Initial reports indicate that the university bus, attempting to overtake a line of vehicles in heavy rain, lost control and veered to the right side of the road. In an attempt to avoid a head-on collision, the truck swerved and struck the left side of the bus, resulting in the tragic incident.

Ten individuals lost their lives instantly, while another succumbed to injuries later at a nearby hospital. The injured, numbering 42, were promptly transported to a medical facility in the town of Voi, as reported by the Kenyan Red Cross.

This heartbreaking incident highlights the ongoing challenges with road safety in Kenya, where inadequate road conditions and frequent violations of traffic regulations contribute to a high rate of accidents. In 2023 alone, 4,324 people lost their lives, with 18,561 sustaining injuries in road accidents across the country. Although there was a slight decrease of 7.8% from the previous year, the beginning of 2024 witnessed a concerning trend, with 536 fatalities recorded between January 1 and February 11, marking a five percent increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

Among the victims of these tragedies was 24-year-old Kelvin Kiptum, the world marathon record holder, whose untimely death occurred on February 11 in a separate road accident, further emphasizing the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures in Kenya.

FG To Withdraw Recognition Of Kenya, Uganda, Niger Varsities

The Federal Government has said the recent suspension of accreditation and evaluation of degree certificates from institutions in Benin Republic and Togo would be extended to more countries like Uganda, Kenya, and the Niger Republic.

Minister of Education Tahir Mamman disclosed this while speaking in an interview on the recently uncovered scandal by an undercover journalist about how he acquired a degree from a university in Benin Republic less than two months ago.

The Federal Government immediately suspended the accreditation of certificates from the two francophone West African nations and launched an investigation into the matter.

The minister said investigation reports will be submitted in three months.

He added that security agents will go after those with fake certificates from foreign countries that are already using them to secure opportunities in Nigeria.

Over 90 Kenyan Schoolgirls Hit By Strange Illness

Over 90 schoolgirls in a Kenyan institution have fallen ill, experiencing difficulties in walking, leading to their admission to a local hospital.

Health authorities in Kenya are actively investigating this health crisis, which has affected the female students of Eregi Girls High School in the country's western region. Additionally, some of the students have displayed symptoms of knee pain.

Jared Obiero, the regional director of education, stated, "The education department, the county government, and the public health department are committed to ensuring the children receive the necessary treatment."

On Tuesday, a senior official from the Ministry of Education visited the school to address worried parents and assure them that the situation was being managed effectively. He emphasised that regular classes would continue for the remaining students.

The affected students' blood, stool, and urine samples have been sent to laboratories in a neighbouring city, Nairobi, the nation's capital. The results of these tests are anticipated later today, shedding light on the root cause of the health issues.

Federal Government Loses Application To Transfer Suit Against Proscribed Ipob Leader, Nnamdi Kanu To Abuja

The Federal Government has lost its bid to transfer the suit of the extraordinary rendition of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Ipob Nnamdi Kanu, from Umuahia to Abuja.

The Federal High Court in Umuahia, Abia State, insisted that it has the jurisdiction to hear and determine the suit.

This was disclosed by Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, in a tweet noting that the matter was still ongoing.

The Special Counsel was challenging Kanu’s abduction and extraordinary rendition from Kenya.

He is, among other things, praying the court to order his return to Kenya, where he was abducted or UK, his country of abode.
