Mourinho Claims Real Madrid Prevented Him from Accepting National Team Role

Former Roma manager Jose Mourinho has disclosed that he was presented with the opportunity to manage a national team, but Real Madrid prevented him from pursuing it.

In an interview with TribalFootball, Mourinho revealed that Portugal offered him the job on two occasions, but due to his commitments to club football, he couldn't accept it.

"I had the chance to become the Portugal coach twice. The first time was when I was at Real Madrid, but Florentino [Perez] told me, 'No chance'," Mourinho explained.

"The second opportunity arose during my time at Roma, but I was dismissed a few months later; however, I don't regret it because I am content with the reason."

Mourinho recently expressed his desire to return to coaching during the summer, stating, "I want to work."

Having managed top clubs such as Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Roma, Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, and FC Porto, Mourinho could have potentially taken on the role of leading his national team.

Mourinho Breaks Silence Following AS Roma Dismissal

In the aftermath of his termination as AS Roma manager on Tuesday morning, Jose Mourinho has spoken out for the first time.

The decision to part ways with the Portuguese tactician came with AS Roma languishing in ninth place in the Serie A table. This position prompted the club to cut ties, despite Mourinho's initial contract running until the end of the season.

On his Instagram page, Mourinho shared a succinct ten-word statement that encapsulated his experience: "Sweat, blood, tears, joy, sadness, love, brothers, history, heart, eternity." Accompanying this statement was a video reel showcasing the highs and lows of his tenure at the club.

Emotions were palpable as Mourinho bid farewell to Roma's training base, Trigoria. Visibly moved, the former Chelsea manager nearly shed tears as fans chanted his name, attempting to capture a final selfie with their departing coach.

Mourinho's attachment to Roma is evident, and his emotional response is perhaps unsurprising. Throughout his managerial career, he has often emphasized his unique connection with Roma, unlike any experience at his previous clubs, such as Real Madrid. The departure marks the end of an era for Mourinho and AS Roma, with emotions running high as they part ways.

Roma announced on Tuesday that Jose Mourinho has been dismissed from his role as the coach of the Serie A side, citing that the decision was made "in the best interests of the club." Despite his contract initially set to conclude in June, Mourinho and his technical team will depart from the club with immediate effect, as confirmed by Roma.

Dan and Ryan Friedkin, the owners of AS Roma, expressed gratitude to Mourinho for his passion and dedication during his tenure with the club. While acknowledging the positive memories created under Mourinho's leadership, the owners emphasized that an immediate change is necessary for the club's overall benefit.

The 60-year-old Portuguese manager, who took charge in 2021, achieved notable success with Roma, clinching the Europa League trophy in 2022 and reaching the final of the Europa League last season. However, Roma has faced challenges in the current campaign, occupying the ninth position in Serie A and trailing five points behind the Champions League positions. A recent 3-1 defeat at the hands of AC Milan added to their struggles.

In parting words, the owners extended their best wishes to Mourinho and his assistants in their future endeavours. Italian media speculate that former Roma captain Daniele De Rossi, a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, may step in as Mourinho's successor as coach.

Chris Smalling scored the winning goal as Jose Mourinho's Roma edged past promoted Cremonese to make it two wins from two in Serie A this season.

The Englishman headed in at the back post in the second half from Lorenzo Pellegrini's corner.

Cremonese's best chance fell to striker Cyriel Dessers, but the Nigerian's strike rattled the crossbar.

Roma, who won the inaugural Europa Conference League last season, are yet to concede this campaign.

Meanwhile, Juventus dropped points after they were held to a goalless draw at Sampdoria.
