Troops Bust IPOB Camp, Kill Armed ESN Fighters In Imo

In a recent operation in Imo State, a combined team of Nigerian Army and Navy personnel engaged in a firefight with members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), resulting in the neutralization of five armed fighters. The encounter took place on Tuesday in Ejemekuru, Oguta Local Government Area, during a raid on a camp affiliated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)/Eastern Security Network.

Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, confirmed the incident in a statement, highlighting the successful operation by the troops. Overwhelming firepower was employed to overcome the armed separatists' resistance, leading to the recovery of a significant cache of dangerous weapons.

Recovered arms included one AK-47 rifle, two pump-action semi-automatic rifles, and one locally fabricated gun, along with two magazines and three rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition. Additionally, the troops seized two motorbikes, two mobile handsets, and a camouflaged jungle hat from the scene.

In a separate operation on the same day, troops engaged in counter-insurgency efforts in North-West Nigeria rescued 15 kidnapped victims in the Tsohuwar Tasha area of Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, Zamfara State. Responding swiftly to a distress call, the vigilant troops confronted the kidnappers, forcing them to abandon their victims and flee into the forest. All abductees were safely rescued without harm.

Major General Nwachukwu reiterated the Nigerian Army's unwavering commitment to addressing security challenges across the country. He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies, underscoring the army's continuous efforts to maintain peace and security nationwide.

The Imo State Police Command has confirmed an attack on a Correctional Service Farm Settlement in the Umualomoke community in the Okigwe Local Government Area of the state.

The attack led to the release of seven inmates, the abduction of the officer in charge of the farm settlement, and the death of a police inspector.

In a statement by the PPRO, Henry Okoye, the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has deployed the Command’s Special Tactical Squad to go all out in synergy with the military and other sister security agencies and hunt down the perpetrators.

He also confirmed that the gunmen equally attacked the residence of the lawmaker representing Imo North Senatorial District, Patrick Ndubeze, located within the area.

Okoye noted that the Police Commissioner has mandated the tactical team to intensify efforts to ensure that the kidnapped officer is rescued unhurt and the fleeing inmates are arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.

A tragic incident unfolded at the Ezinihitte Area Command in Imo State as a police officer, Corporal Cosmas Ugwu, was fatally shot by his 23-year-old girlfriend, identified as Amanda Uchechi Ugo, on Boxing Day. The Imo State Police Command confirmed the unfortunate incident, highlighting the shocking details.

The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m., and officers on counter duty were alerted by three gunshots from the room occupied by the deceased officer. Rushing to the scene, they discovered Corporal Ugwu lying in a pool of blood. Reports indicate that the girlfriend had shot him three times in the chest and left hand. Urgently, he was transported to Evergreen Hospital in Ezinihitte, where the attending doctor pronounced him dead.

According to sources, the deceased and his girlfriend had a serious altercation, leading to the fatal shooting. In the heat of the argument, the girlfriend reportedly seized the officer's rifle, successfully pulling the trigger three times. The circumstances surrounding her ability to handle a police rifle remain a mystery, prompting speculation that the officer might have taught her.

The remains of Corporal Ugwu have been deposited at the Obizi mortuary while investigations continue to unravel the events leading to the tragic incident. The suspect, Amanda Uchechi Ugo, is currently in police custody, undergoing interrogation with the possibility of prosecution.

Confirming the incident, the police public relations officer in Imo State, Henry Okoye, expressed the police's commitment to investigating the matter thoroughly.

In a telephone conversation, he stated, "Yes, the incident happened. A policeman was allegedly shot dead by his girlfriend. He was serving at Ezinihitte Mbaise. Currently, the girl involved has been arrested. We are doing everything to ensure we investigate the matter, to ascertain the facts and possibly prosecute the suspect in court."
