Omobolanle Raheem: Court Sentences Police Officer To Death For Killing Lawyer

A high court in Lagos has sentenced Drambi Vandi, the officer involved in killing Bolanle Raheem, a lawyer, to death by hanging.

Ibironke Harrison, the trial judge, in her ruling on Monday, convicted Vandi of a one-count charge of murder.

"The court finds the defendant guilty on one count of murder. You will be hanged by the

neck till you are dead," the judge ruled.

Recalls that on December 25, 2022, Raheem, pregnant at the time, was shot dead in an incident involving Vandi and other police officers at the Ajah under the bridge, Lagos.

Vandi was said to have pulled the trigger, with the bullet piercing the deceased's chest.

The lawyer was declared dead at the third hospital she was taken to after the shooting incident.

The incident elicited widespread outrage, with many Nigerians calling for an investigation into the activities of police officers attached to the Ajiwe police station, Ajah.

Subsequently, the Lagos state government arraigned Vandi on a one-count charge of murder. The officer pleaded not guilty.

A Federal Capital Territory High Court has ordered the interim forfeiture of $899,900 and N304.4 million naira recovered from a former Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) Ahmed Idris, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The court also forfeited 15 properties recovered from Idris in Kano and Abuja.

Idris and others are being prosecuted by the EFCC on 14 counts of stealing and money laundering to the tune of N109billion.

A statement by EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren said Justice Mohammed Hassan gave the Order while ruling on a motion exparte filed by the EFCC.

Justice NATHANIEL EMMANUEL made the declaration today while delivering a ruling in a suit filed by a factional candidate of the PDP, DOTUN BABAYEMI.

BABAYEMI asked the court to be recognized as the authentic candidate of the Party following the parallel primaries held on March 9.

Kano State High Court Sentences Man To Death By Hanging For Killing Wife

A Kano State High Court has sentenced a man, Aminu Inuwa, to death by hanging for killing his wife Safara’u Mamman.

Inuwa, whose age was not provided by the court, lives at Gwazaye Quarters, Dorayi Babba, area of the state.

Justice Usman Na’abba held that the prosecution has proven its case beyond reasonable doubts.

The Prosecution Counsel, Lamido Sorondinki, informed the court that the convict committed the offence on April 2, 2019 at Gwazaye Quarters Dorayi Babba Kano.

He said that the convict slit his wife’s throat with a kitchen knife during an argument and buried her in an uncompleted room in his house situated at Dorayi Babba Kano.

 

The prosecution presented three witnesses and six exhibits to prove its case but Aminu Inuwa denied committing the offence.
