Former Wales, Tottenham and Real Madrid Forward, Gareth Bale Retires From Football Aged 33

Wales star Gareth Bale has announced his retirement from football at the age of 33, putting an end to an amazing career in which he became his country’s most-capped men’s player and won a slew of medals with Real Madrid.

“I announce my immediate retirement from club and international football after deep and thorough thinking,” Bale stated in a statement on Monday.

“I feel incredibly fortunate to have realised my dream of playing the sport I love. It has truly given me some of the best moments of my life,” the Los Angeles FC forward added.

“No matter what the next chapter has in store for me, the greatest of highs throughout 17 seasons will be hard to repeat,” he stated.

Bale, a five-time Champions League champion with Real Madrid, is one of the greatest players to have ever represented Wales, appearing in a record 111 games.

He guided Wales to their first World Cup since 1958 in Qatar 2022 as captain and talisman. This followed previous victories that saw the nation qualify for the 2016 and 2020 European championship tournaments, partly due to Bale’s brilliance.

His 41 goals placed him 13 goals ahead of great striker Ian Rush on Wales’ all-time men’s scoring list.

Gareth Bale says he plans to return to Real Madrid next season after his loan at Tottenham ends.

Wales captain Bale rejoined Spurs on a season-long loan in September but has a year left on his Real contract, which expires in the summer of 2022.

31-year-old Bale is with Wales as they prepare for their opening World Cup qualifier away against Belgium on Wednesday.

"There's no distraction for me," Bale said when asked how his club future might affect his international form.

"I think the main reason I came to Spurs this year was to play football first and foremost.

"Going into the Euros I wanted to be match-fit. The original plan was to do a season at Spurs and after the Euros still have a year left at Real Madrid.

"My plan is to go back, that's as far I have planned."

At Real, Bale has won four Champions League titles, two La Liga championships, one Copa del Rey, three UEFA Super Cups and three Club World Cups.

However, a run of injuries, indifferent form and a deteriorating relationship with manager Zinedine Zidane had seen Bale become a marginal figure in Spain.

Gareth Bale Impressive As Totteham Ease Past Wolfberger In Europa Last-32 First Leg

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho said they had "one foot in the next round" after Gareth Bale inspired them his side to victory over Wolfsberger in the Europa League last 32 first leg.

Bale crossed for Son Heung-min to head the opener and then got on the score-sheet after blasting home their second goal. That was the first time since April 2013 that he scored and assisted a Tottenham goal in the same game.

Lucas Moura added a fine solo goal before half-time in Budapest.

But Michael Liendl's penalty gave Wolfsberger hope and Christopher Wernitznig hit the bar - before Carlos Vinicius probably killed the tie.

Wolfsberger were limited opposition, sitting sixth in the Austrian league and in a European knockout game for the first time. The game had to be played six hours away in Budapest, Hungary because of Covid19 restrictions.

Bale makes Welsh squad for crucial Euro 2020 qualifiers

Gareth Bale, who is struggling with a calf problem, has been included by Ryan Giggs in the Wales squad for their must-win final two Euro 2020 qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Hungary.

The 30-year-old Real Madrid star, who has not played since scoring for Wales in their 1-1 draw with World Cup finalists Croatia on October 13 is nevertheless considered a doubt for both the game in Azerbaijan on November 16 and at home to Hungary on the 19.

The Welsh surprise semi-finalists at Euro 2016 are presently fourth in their group, six points adrift of table-topping Croatia and four points adrift of second-placed Hungary.

Bale returned to light training with Real Madrid last week after a visit to London which sparked more speculation about his future.

This accelerated on Monday with claims Real Madrid were preparing a £70m ($90 million) bid plus Bale to lure England striker Raheem Sterling away from Manchester City.
