Federal Government Issues Warning: 148 Local Government Areas at High Risk of Flooding

The Federal Government has issued a warning indicating that 148 local government areas across 31 states in the country are situated in high flood-risk zones. This announcement was made in Abuja by the Minister of Water Resources, Prof. Joseph Utsev, during the presentation of the key points from the 2024 Annual Flood Outlook prepared by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency on Tuesday.

Utsev outlined the states with high flood-risk areas, including Adamawa, Akwa-Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kofi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, and Yobe. These areas are expected to be susceptible to floods between April and November 2024.

Furthermore, the minister noted that a portion of the 249 LGAs spread across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) fall within moderate flood risk zones, although specific locations were not disclosed.

While Nigeria typically experiences seasonal flooding, the floods of 2022 were particularly severe, marking the worst since the 2012 floods. The 2022 flooding impacted 33 out of Nigeria's 36 states, resulting in the displacement of over two million people.

The Federal Government has said heavy rainfall that could lead to flooding may hit about 48 towns in 13 states between Wednesday and Sunday.

The government stated this in the flood prediction report of the National Flood Early Warning Systems Central Hub of the Federal Ministry of Environment.

It predicted that the rise in the water levels of River Benue and River Niger could affect communities along the rivers up to Bayelsa State. It advised residents in these areas to take precautionary measures.

Meanwhile, one person has reportedly died as flood wreaked havoc at the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation Bungalow Scheme, Oke Afa, in the Isolo area of Lagos.

Bayelsa Resident Decries Pitiable Effect Of Flood In State Says Bag Of Rice Sells For 80,000

As flood continues to ravage the length and breadth of Nigeria, one of the states that is badly hit by the ravaging flood with many homes submerged and thousands of people rendered homeless is Bayelsa State.

Among the worst affected areas in the state are: Biseni, Tombia-Ekpetiama, Tombia-Amassoma Road, Akenfa, Akenpai, Igbogene and Swali, all in Yenagoa Local Government Area, as well as Kaiama, Odi, Otuoke, and Ogbia communities.

A resident of the state who spoke to Inspiration FM, Isaac moore Agraka, described the situation as disturbing, saying people are now living in very pathetic and helpless condition.

however, the Federal Government says it has distributed relief items to 21 states affected by floods, noting that over one million persons have been internally displaced, with approximately 2,776 persons injured, while 612 persons have lost their lives due to the devastating effects of the floods across the country.

NIMET Warns Of Impending Flood In 32 States

Nigerians have been warned by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency, (NIMET), to brace up for possible flash floods across 32 states in the next three days.

According to a statement released by the agency, which was made available to Inspiration FM News, , NIMET noted that the moderate to heavy rainfall could lead to flash floods in states like. Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, and Bauchi.

Other States prone to the floods are Gombe, Yobe, Kebbi, Niger, FCT, Plateau, Adamawa, Taraba, Kwara, Oyo, Lagos, Ondo, and Ogun.

States like Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Benue, Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo, Anambra, Abia and River are also not exempted

Consequently, the Nigeria Meteorological Agency warned Nigerians in these 32 states that the slim chances of flash flood could be more pronounced on roads, settlements, farmlands and bridges.
