Customs Must Compensate Families Of Lagos Stampede Victims — Falana

Human rights advocate, Femi Falana, urged the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to compensate the families affected by a tragic stampede in Lagos last month.

The incident, which occurred on February 23, 2024, claimed several lives during the rush to purchase subsidized rice sold by the NCS at their Zonal Office in Lagos. Despite the immediate suspension of the food distribution initiative by Customs following the incident, Falana criticized the lack of compensation for the victims' families.

Expressing dismay, Falana highlighted the NCS's failure to identify and offer condolences to the bereaved families, instead attributing blame to the deceased for their supposed impatience. He emphasized the NCS's responsibility for negligence, citing previous stampedes during similar food distributions. Falana argued that the NCS should have foreseen the overcrowding given the significant price difference between the subsidized rice and its market value.

Falana called for urgent steps to identify and compensate the families of the deceased, warning of legal action if necessary to uphold the victims' right to life as guaranteed by Nigerian law and international human rights conventions. Additionally, he urged the NCS to resume rice distribution promptly, suggesting that it be conducted through local government channels to prevent further stampedes.

In his appeal, Falana stressed the importance of accountability and the protection of citizens' rights, urging swift action to address the aftermath of the tragic incident.

Call for Transparency: Falana Urges Review of Fuel Subsidy Policy

Human rights advocate Femi Falana (SAN) is urging the Federal Government to reevaluate its fuel subsidy removal policy following allegations of continued payments. Despite President Bola Tinubu's declaration ending the subsidy era upon his inauguration, recent assertions from the World Bank and Robert Dickerman, CEO of Pinnacle Oil and Gas Limited, suggest otherwise.

Falana, in a statement issued on Sunday, highlighted the need for the government to address these claims and reconsider the policy. He pointed out the absence of provisions for fuel subsidy in the 2023 and 2024 Appropriation Acts, emphasizing the urgency for transparency regarding fuel importation.

Notably, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited has not refuted the allegation of reinstated fuel subsidies. Falana called for swift clarification from the government to dispel the opacity surrounding fuel importation.

The administration's shift from proclaiming subsidy removal to spending a significant sum on "under-recovery" over eight years raises concerns. Falana questions the logic of enduring hardship caused by subsidy removal, particularly if substantial amounts are still being spent on it monthly.

In light of these developments, Falana advocates for a review of the subsidy policy in the best interest of Nigerians. If the government is indeed allocating considerable funds to fuel subsidies, it underscores the necessity for a reassessment to alleviate the burdens on the populace.

Falana Urges Tinubu, Governors To Cut Other Areas Of Waste

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has commended President Bola Tinubu for reducing his travel entourage to 60 percent but suggested he can still drop it further to 40 percent.

On Tuesday, the presidency announced that President Tinubu has directed a major slash in travel delegations for all federal government official trips within and outside the country.

Falana, while speaking on a monitored programme, said this is commendable but insisted that there are other areas where resources could be saved.

However, the Senior Advocate added that the government can further reduce the number from 60 to 40 percent in reflection of the bad state of the economy.

The senior lawyer also stated that this policy must not be limited to the president or the presidency.

Falana Leads Protest As Lagos Lawyers Demand Probe Of Colleague’s Assault

Renowned human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, took part in a demonstration alongside fellow legal professionals in Lagos, protesting against police brutality directed at lawyers and citizens. The catalyst for the protest was the recent detention of Olumide Sonupe, a lawyer based in Lagos, who had been held by the police at Gowon Estate Police Station for two days.

Sonupe's ordeal, during which a police officer allegedly assaulted him during negotiations, resulted in his hospitalisation on December 30, 2023. Responding to this incident and other reported cases of harassment and assault by the Nigerian police, hundreds of lawyers gathered at the bar centre of the Nigerian Bar Association (Ikeja branch). From there, they peacefully marched to the headquarters of the Lagos State Police Command.

During a press briefing in Ikeja, Falana explained that representatives from the five branches of the NBA in Lagos had met with the state police commissioner, Adegoke Fayoade. The commissioner assured them that a comprehensive investigation had been initiated into the Olumide Sonupe incident.

"Lagos State lawyers united today to protest against police brutality, prompted by the recent mistreatment of one of our colleagues," Falana declared. "Through him, we are making a stand that Nigerian lawyers and citizens will no longer tolerate the brutalisation of legal practitioners and the general populace. The NBA advocates for a thorough investigation into the incident at the police station, and fortunately, the commissioner of police announced today that an in-depth inquiry is already underway."

Originally intending to submit their petition against police brutality to Commissioner Fayoade, the lawyers found that the commissioner had learned of their planned protest. Commissioner Fayoade appeared at the bar centre before the protest to address their concerns, engaging in dialogue with the lawyers. Despite initial resistance to his presence, the lawyers, under Falana's guidance, permitted him to address the gathering before submitting their letter of protest.

Nevertheless, led by Femi Falana and the chairpersons of all five branches of the NBA in Lagos, the lawyers proceeded with the protest, vocalising solidarity songs to express their discontent with the behaviour of the police.
