FAAN Reopens Lagos Airport Runway After Dana Air Incident

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the reopening of Runway 18L/36R at Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos after a brief shutdown caused by a Dana Air aircraft that skidded off the runway on Tuesday. The reopening was confirmed in a press release by FAAN's Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, on Wednesday.

The statement explained, "Runway 18L/36R was reopened for flight operations at 19:58 hours following its closure earlier today due to a Dana Air aircraft, with registration number 5N-BKI, overshooting the runway during landing. Our emergency teams responded promptly to evacuate the aircraft and clear the runway of any potential hazards to ensure its safety for flight operations."

FAAN and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency conducted a thorough inspection of the runway surface and confirmed it was safe to resume flights. Orah noted that the area where the aircraft overshot was particularly muddy, which required significant cleaning efforts to ensure the runway's safety.

She apologized for the disruption caused by the incident, emphasizing that "FAAN remains dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of safety and security for all passengers, staff, and airport operations. We are grateful for the patience, understanding, and cooperation of the traveling public, our airline partners, and all stakeholders during the runway's temporary closure and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

No Going Back On FAAN Relocation To Lagos, N500m Will Be Saved Annually — Keyamo

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has firmly asserted that the decision to relocate the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) headquarters from Abuja to Lagos is irreversible.

Keyamo made this declaration during a monitored program on Wednesday, stating, "We are going ahead. The directive has been given."

Despite opposition from figures like Senator Ali Ndume from Borno South and various northern groups, including the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), who perceive the move as an attempt to marginalise the northern region, Keyamo emphasised the necessity of the relocation.

Keyamo, a senior advocate for Nigeria, explained that the decision aligns with current economic and operational realities. He highlighted that shifting the FAAN headquarters to Lagos would annually save the government and the Nigerian people half a billion naira, which is currently spent on air tickets for officials commuting between Lagos and Abuja.

Addressing concerns about President Bola Tinubu's awareness of the decision, Keyamo asserted that the decision falls under the minister's purview. He clarified that only the headquarters of one of the seven aviation agencies in the country is being moved, emphasising that the decision-makers, not the majority of workers, determine the location of the headquarters.

Keyamo shed light on the lack of adequate provisions when his predecessor, Hadi Sirika, relocated all aviation agency headquarters from Lagos to Abuja in 2020. He pointed out that the move resulted in challenges for principal officers, such as directors and their support staff.

The minister underscored the digitalization gap within FAAN and highlighted the financial burden of officials shuttling between Lagos and Abuja. He revealed that in a year, FAAN spends nearly half a billion naira on flight tickets alone for officials travelling for routine tasks like getting a file signed.

FAAN Relocates Headquarters From Abuja Back To Lagos

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is set to relocate its corporate headquarters from Abuja back to Lagos.

This is contained in a statement in Abuja by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, FAAN, Obiageli Orah.

This is years after the minister’s predecessor, HADI SIRIKA, moved the aviation agencies to the nation’s capital.

The statement said the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Kayamo, ordered relocation to curb the waste of public resources.

She said the FAAN management and stakeholders, which also involved the unions, agreed that the action was in the best interest of the authority and the country.

The statement further said it was ill-advised in the first place to move the headquarters to Abuja when there was no single FAAN building in Abuja to accommodate all of them at once.

Orah noted that more than 60 percent of the FAAN activities were in Lagos, given the huge passenger volume of the Lagos airports.

She stated that Abuja would continue to have full operational offices as FAAN had not scaled down operations in Abuja one bit.

Kaduna state troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued 10 persons abducted from the staff quarters of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) after 11 days in captivity.

They were abducted on March 6 when bandits invaded the FAAN staff quarters in the Ifira community, near the Kaduna airport.

The state’s commissioner for internal security and home affairs, SAMUEL ARUWAN confirmed their release but said precise details of the rescue location cannot be provided due to operational expediency.

He added that Governor NASIR EL-RUFAI has met with the rescued citizens “to encourage them, and assure them of the unwavering commitment of the Kaduna state government”.

However, the 39 students of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanization, Afaka, who was abducted by bandits are still in captivity.
