Governor Mbah Launches New Phase of Palliatives Distribution

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah initiated another phase of palliatives distribution in the state on Thursday, emphasizing the importance of preventing politicization to ensure equitable distribution to the most vulnerable individuals.

Mbah underscored that while these palliatives offer immediate relief, they are part of broader efforts by both the federal government and the state to alleviate economic hardships while waiting for the full fruition of the state's economic policies and programs.

During the official launch, Governor Mbah inspected the food items, primarily grains, and assured continuous distribution in the future. He reiterated the state's commitment to addressing economic challenges faced by its residents.

"This distribution is part of our short-term strategy to combat poverty and hunger," Mbah stated. "However, our long-term goal is to eradicate poverty through various initiatives such as community and social development programs, small and medium enterprise support, and women empowerment programs."

He emphasized the importance of empowering individuals to create wealth, whether through agriculture, business, or service provision, rather than relying solely on handouts. The state is focused on providing skills and financial support to boost productivity and entrepreneurship.

While acknowledging the immediate need for food assistance, Mbah stressed the importance of sustainable solutions to poverty alleviation. He directed the palliative distribution committee to ensure the equitable distribution of items across all wards in the state, prioritizing those most in need without allowing political influence.

"We must ensure that these palliatives reach the most vulnerable members of our society," Governor Mbah emphasized. "It is imperative that we avoid politicizing this process and prioritize those who are truly in need."

Senator Ayogu Eze Passes Away

Reports indicate the passing of Senator Ayogu Eze, a prominent figure from Enugu State, at the age of 66. Representing the Enugu North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Eze served as a vital member of the political landscape.

Sources reveal that Senator Eze, a former Senate spokesperson, succumbed to a prolonged illness at an Abuja hospital. His declining health prevented him from attending his child's wedding earlier in the year in Lagos State.

A founding member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Eze later switched allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC), contesting the Enugu State gubernatorial election.

During his tenure in the Senate, Senator Eze held significant positions, including chairmanship of the Senate Committee on Information and Media in 2007, earning him the role of the Senate's official spokesperson. Following his reelection in 2011, he assumed the chairmanship of the Committee on Works.

Senator Eze also served as a member of various committees, including Police Affairs, National Planning, Marine Transport, and Federal Character & Inter-Governmental Affairs.

In May of the previous year, the Senate confirmed Senator Eze's appointment, along with five others, as Federal Commissioners for the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC).

Enugu Governorship Tribunal Upholds Mbah’s Victory, Dismisses Edeoga’s Petition

The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Enugu State has affirmed the victory of Governor Peter Mbah from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), dismissing the challenge brought forth by Barr Chijioke Edeoga of the Labour Party (LP). Edeoga's primary claims revolved around allegations of Mbah's NYSC certificate forgery, election irregularities, and over-voting.

The three-person panel, led by Justice Kudirat Morayo Akano, ruled in favour of Mbah, rejecting Edeoga's bid to disqualify him based on the alleged NYSC certificate forgery. The panel clarified that, according to Section 177 of the 1999 Constitution, an NYSC certificate is not a mandatory requirement for gubernatorial candidates.

The Tribunal emphasised that Mbah had already met the qualifications for office without the NYSC certificate, as he did not submit it to INEC. The allegations of over-voting and BVAS bypassing were also dismissed.

Furthermore, the panel determined that the witnesses presented by the Labour Party were not accredited agents recognised by INEC, rendering their testimony invalid. It concluded that Mbah was duly elected governor based on the majority of lawful and valid votes cast during the election.

Earlier in the day, the Tribunal dismissed a petition from the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) gubernatorial candidate, Elder Christopher Agu.

Residents Flee As Nigerian Army Invade Two Communities In Enugu State

Men of the Nigerian Army have reportedly invaded two communities in the Nkanu East and Nkanu West local government areas of Enugu state.

The affected communities are Ekpoffo and Akpugo.

Although the reason for the invasion could not be immediately ascertained, villagers who spoke from their hidings said it might not be unconnected with the recent sacking of herdsmen who were terrorising the area.

Some also believed that the invasion could be the directive of the Presidency to security agencies to hunt down Biafran agitators in the South-East region.

Community sources told our correspondent that the soldiers invaded Ekpoffo on Wednesday and whisked away some youths to unknown destinations
