The EFCC Obeys Order, Produces Emefiele In Court

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) followed with the decision of Justice Olukayode Adeniyi of a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, on Wednesday by producing Mr Godwin Emefiele, the jailed former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in court.

Following the Commission’s refusal to present Emefiele in court on November 6, Justice Adeniyi reaffirmed his ruling on Monday.

On November 2, he issued the ruling based on an ex parte application submitted by the former CBN chairman.

The judgment specifically stated that the anti-graft agency should either free Emefiele immediately or produce him in court on Monday, November 6, to be permitted to bail.

However, the Commission did not disclose or produce the former CBN chairman during Monday’s sessions, causing the court to rescind his decision and set a new date of November 8.

However, a few minutes before the 1pm hearing, the Commission brought Emefiele to court in accordance with the court’s order.

The former CBN governor arrived in court at 12.45pm, dressed in a gold kaftan and a striped headgear.

Meanwhile, lawyers for the parties to the dispute are already seated and waiting for the proceedings to begin.

Emefiele has been in federal government custody since June 10, when he was detained in Lagos and then moved to Abuja.

Despite a court order, the Department of State Service (DSS), who had arrested him, refused to release him on bail. He was eventually charged with unlawful possession of firearms in Lagos, and then with corruption in Abuja, before being handed over to the EFCC two weeks ago.

Emefiele Begs NLC To Shelve Protest Over Naira Scarcity

The governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele has appealed to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, to prevail on the leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over its planned protest slated for Wednesday.

The leadership of NLC had last Friday mobilized its affiliate unions and the State Councils to shut down offices of the apex bank nationwide over current cash scarcity in the country.

But in a closed-door meeting at the headquarters of Ministry of Labour and Employment in Abuja, Emefiele was quoted as saying the protest would hinder the progress of the apex bank if not averted.

The President of NLC, Joe Ajaero led other Labour leaders while Emefiele led the apex bank officials to the meeting that was later presided over by the Minister.

An official of the ministry, who craved anonymity, said Emefiele promised to ensure that all commercial banks were given enough cash from the CBN’s vault.

None of those in attendance spoke to journalists after the closed-door meeting.

House Of Representatives Again Asks CBN Governor, Emefiele To Appear Before It On Thursday After Defaulting Twice

The house of representatives has again fixed another date for the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele to appear before it after defaulting twice.

The lawmakers had invited him over the cash withdrawal limit policy of the apex bank.

However, Emefiele, in a letter written by the Deputy Governor, Corporate Services, CBN, Edward Adamu, said he is currently outside the country for an official assignment.

He stated that he will communicate with the House on an appropriate date.

It would be recalled that the briefing has been postponed twice by the lawmakers, as Emefiele has been outside the country.

The lawmakers debated the development and the Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, said the CBN governor must brief the House on his reason for spending two weeks outside the country.

CBN Governor Emefiele Blames Babangida For Naira Crash

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has blamed former military dictator Ibrahim Babangida,  for the downward trend in the value of the naira.

Mr Emefiele said this much at the State House, Abuja, during the launch of Nigeria’s digital currency, the eNaira.

“Please recall that since the advent of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) led Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) in 1986, and the introduction of the Second Tier Foreign Exchange (SFEM) market, the Naira has been on a one-way free fall from parity to the US Dollar in 1984 to over N410/USD today,” Emefiele said.

According to the governor of Nigeria’s apex bank, “Some 35 years later, we have not been able to achieve the many promises and objectives of that programme.”

In 1985, Mr Babangida made an agreement with the IMF to receive new loans from the World Bank. As a condition for granting the loan, the IMF called for Nigeria to devalue its currency and end the practice of subsidising petroleum products for consumers.

The CBN governor added that Nigeria possesses‘strong’ external foreign reserves, saying that it currently stands at over $40 billion.

He referred to the national currency trading at 410 to the dollar, the official exchange set by the apex bank, without regarding the easily accessible parallel markets where the naira is pushing N600 to the dollar since the ban on foreign exchange transactions with BDCs.

Emefiele also blamed the devaluation of the Naira on the country’s import dependency, saying that it had “wiped out most of our production and manufacturing bases and exported all our jobs in the process.”
