Newcastle’s chances of reaching the Champions League Knockout Stages Were Dashed As They Fell To Defeat Against Borussia Dortmund

Niclas Fullkrug scored for the hosts midway through the first half, and Julian Brandt added a second late on as the Germans completed a Group F double over their English opponents.

Newcastle’s greatest chance came just after the break, when Joelinton nodded Tino Livramento’s cross wide from five yards out.

The Brazil international’s shot was a rare clear sight at goal for Newcastle, with Edin Terzic’s Dortmund side dominating the first half.

Despite the visitors’ much superior second-half performance, the hosts had the better chances.

“We weren’t at our best today,” Newcastle boss Eddie Howe explained. “Our normal intensity and quality were missing.”

“We still had our chances, and Joelinton’s header was probably the game’s turning point from our perspective.” If it came in again, he’d bet on himself to score.”

After the interval, the game was also briefly halted as fake golden bars and other objects were thrown onto the pitch from the ‘Yellow Wall’ as part of a protest against Uefa’s proposed Champions League reforms, with one banner reading “You don’t care about the sport – all you care about is money.”

Newcastle’s return to Europe’s elite competition began with a stalemate away at AC Milan, followed by a thrashing of Paris St-Germain on Tyneside.

However, they now face an uphill battle to reach the knockout stages, with Dortmund’s double success over Howe’s side putting them three points ahead of Newcastle, who play PSG in their last group match.

If Newcastle loses in Paris, they will be unable to advance in the tournament following AC Milan’s triumph over the French champions later on Tuesday.

Dortmund Rule Out Haaland Sale

Borussia Dortmund have ruled out selling Erling Braut Haaland this summer amid interest from Chelsea.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is keen on Haaland, whose 20 goals in 16 Champions League games for Red Bull Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund has made him one of Europe's most sought-after players.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has also been monitoring the situation.

He is looking to sign a striker this summer following the exit of the club's record scorer Sergio Aguero, who joined Barcelona on a free transfer.

City have also been heavily linked with England skipper Harry Kane, whose Tottenham future is open to doubt.

The club have already played down speculation linking them with Barcelona's Antoine Griezmann and Bayern Munich frontman Robert Lewandowski.

But Dortmund are determined to reject any offers for Haaland.

Man Utd Confirm Agreement With Dortmund For Jadon Sancho

Manchester United have confirmed an agreement in principle to sign Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth £73m.

The England international will undergo a medical following his involvement in Euro 2020 before completing his switch to Old Trafford.

Dortmund made a stock exchange announcement on Thursday morning, which also confirmed Sancho has agreed personal terms with United, with the transfer set be completed subject to a medical.

The agreement was also confirmed by Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke, as the club held a news conference to unveil new head coach Marco Rose.

Dortmund's asking price at the start of the window was in excess of £85m and the deal is also £35m less than the £108m valuation last summer.

Sancho's contract at Dortmund runs until the summer of 2023 and they did not want to risk him entering the final year of his deal.

Man Utd Agree £73m Fee With Dortmund For Jadon Sancho

Manchester United have agreed a fee in principle of 85m euros (£73m) with Borussia Dortmund for Jadon Sancho.

The 21-year-old England winger, who is yet to have a medical or agree personal terms, is expected to sign a five-year contract with the option of a sixth.

The fee, payable over five equal instalments, will see Sancho become the second-most expensive English player of all time behind Harry Maguire.

Defender Maguire joined United from Leicester for £80m in 2019.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has identified four key positions he wants to improve as they look to build on their progress last season.

After steering his side to second in the Premier League and the Europa League final, the Norwegian is looking to strengthen the right side of his midfield, then the central defensive, midfield and attacking areas.

Sancho scored 50 goals and registered 57 assists in 137 appearances for Dortmund, scoring twice in the German Cup final to help the Bundesliga side to a 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig in May.

He has won 20 caps for England since his international debut in 2018, scoring three goals, and was named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season in 2018-19 and 2019-20.
