Customs Must Compensate Families Of Lagos Stampede Victims — Falana

Human rights advocate, Femi Falana, urged the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to compensate the families affected by a tragic stampede in Lagos last month.

The incident, which occurred on February 23, 2024, claimed several lives during the rush to purchase subsidized rice sold by the NCS at their Zonal Office in Lagos. Despite the immediate suspension of the food distribution initiative by Customs following the incident, Falana criticized the lack of compensation for the victims' families.

Expressing dismay, Falana highlighted the NCS's failure to identify and offer condolences to the bereaved families, instead attributing blame to the deceased for their supposed impatience. He emphasized the NCS's responsibility for negligence, citing previous stampedes during similar food distributions. Falana argued that the NCS should have foreseen the overcrowding given the significant price difference between the subsidized rice and its market value.

Falana called for urgent steps to identify and compensate the families of the deceased, warning of legal action if necessary to uphold the victims' right to life as guaranteed by Nigerian law and international human rights conventions. Additionally, he urged the NCS to resume rice distribution promptly, suggesting that it be conducted through local government channels to prevent further stampedes.

In his appeal, Falana stressed the importance of accountability and the protection of citizens' rights, urging swift action to address the aftermath of the tragic incident.

Customs Suspend Rice Sale After Seven Die In Stampede

The Nigeria Customs Service made a significant announcement on Monday regarding the sale of foodstuffs. This decision came after a tragic incident at the NCS Old Zonal Headquarters in Lagos State's Yaba area, where seven individuals lost their lives in a stampede.

Abdullahi Maiwada, the Chief Superintendent of Customs and National Public Relations Officer for the Comptroller General of Customs, revealed the suspension of the food sale initiative in a statement.

The NCS had initiated the sale of seized food items at a discounted rate of N10,000 per 25kg to help alleviate the economic burden on the populace due to soaring living costs. However, the unfortunate events on Friday prompted this suspension.

Reports indicate that a pregnant woman and six others lost their lives in a stampede caused by suspected hoodlums trying to gain access to the Yaba Customs office compound.

Following the suspension, disappointment rippled through the crowd of Lagos residents who had gathered at the NCS office in Yaba to purchase rice. Despite officers' efforts to explain the situation and inform people that the service had run out of stock, the crowd persisted.

Individuals like Toyin Oke-Owo expressed their frustration, highlighting the pressing issue of hunger and calling upon the government, specifically President Bola Tinubu, to address the nation's economic challenges.

Similarly, Adesola Odefunso pleaded for assistance, urging authorities to distribute the remaining food items to those who had been waiting since the early hours of the morning.

In response to the situation, the NCS released a statement in the evening, citing the need for suspension in light of the recent tragic events. They expressed regret over the outcome and extended condolences to the families of the victims.

The NCS spokesperson outlined the events leading to the suspension, emphasizing the smooth start of the exercise but the unforeseen challenges that arose when stock ran out, leading to the regrettable stampede.

The Customs Service assured the public of their commitment to working with health authorities and directly engaging with the families of the victims to determine the next steps forward.

Peter Obi Urges Nigerian Govt To Address Inconsistent Customs Duties

Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has urged the federal government to promptly address the adverse effects of fluctuating customs duties on businesses in Nigeria.

In a post on a microblogging platform, Mr. Obi underscored how arbitrary and escalating charges foster an unfriendly business climate for entrepreneurs.

He pointed out a critical challenge that importers face, who initially calculate costs based on a specific exchange rate, only to encounter different rates upon arriving in Nigeria. He emphasised that this inconsistency poses significant hurdles for businesses and exacerbates inflation, resulting in elevated goods and living expenses for citizens.

Mr. Obi cautioned that the current situation could lead to further business closures and job losses. He warned of the potential consequences of importers seeking alternative ports in neighbouring countries if the inconsistencies persist, thereby rendering Nigerian ports unproductive and worsening economic woes.

He stressed the urgent need for the government to maintain policy consistency, highlighting its importance for economic forecasting and business planning. Additionally, he called for immediate action to support businesses, especially those in the manufacturing sector, to prevent closures and sustain economic growth.
