Lagos Bans Single-Use Plastics With ‘Immediate Effect’

Reactions are still trailing the state's ban on using and distributing Styrofoam and other single-use plastics.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who announced the ban, said the decision was reached following the menace the single-use plastics, especially the non-biodegradable Styrofoam, are causing on the environment.

He lamented that styrofoam packs clog up most drainage channels in the state despite the regular cleaning and evacuation of the drains with huge amounts of money.

But the 2023 governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, faulted what he termed the knee-jerk approach of the government to a matter that could severely impact Nigerians in that line of business.

Rhodes-Vivour said such a move should involve a holistic engagement with stakeholders in that value chain.

Rhodes-Vivour, an environmental activist, advised the state government to adopt an alternative policy that would remain sustainable in the long term.
