CJN Urges Judges To Remain Fair In Judgements

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has asked judges to maintain the integrity that the judiciary is known for and remain fair and firm in their judgments.

The CJN stated this while speaking at the opening of the special session of the 2023–2024 legal year and swearing-in of 58 newly conferred Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) in Abuja.

Ariwoola added that he expects every judicial officer to work very hard, be honest and courteous to the litigants, witnesses, and members of the bar, and discharge all their judicial functions with all humility, not pandering to public emotions.

Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, spoke on the need for judicial reforms.

President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Yakubu Maikyau, speaks on the challenges facing the judiciary in recent times.

Judgments Based On Constitution, Not Public Opinion – CJN

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, has said public opinions, no matter how serious or weighty, cannot supersede the country’s constitution’s provisions in determining legal disputes in court.

The CJN said judges must follow the law when deciding cases.

Justice Ariwoola stated this after swearing in 23 newly-appointed judges of the Federal High Court.

Among the new judges is the son of the CJN, Olukayode Ariwoola Junior.

The CJN, in his speech, stressed that the appointment of the judges was not to amass wealth, warning that any form of wrongdoing would not be condoned.

CJN Laments Steady Rise In Political Cases

During the swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed Justices of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, Chief Justice Olukayode Ariwoola expressed deep concern regarding the overwhelming caseload of judges, especially those related to political matters.

Justice Ariwoola emphasised the need for a shift towards alternative dispute resolution methods, asserting that this approach would not only alleviate the burden on justices but also conserve valuable judicial resources.

He urged the jurists to uphold their esteemed reputation and resist any allurements that may accompany extravagant gifts.

Following the Court of Appeal's practice direction, which permits a roster of 90 justices, the addition of nine new justices increases the total number of judges from 71 to 80. This move aims to enhance the capacity of the court to handle its caseload effectively.
