Cost Of Living: Lagos Civil Servants To Work Three Days A Week

On Thursday, the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said his administration would be reducing public servants' working days as part of plans to cushion the cost-of-living crisis in the country.

“We want to start with our public servants, immediately from next week; civil servants from the lower level will be working like three times a week, and level 15–17 can work four times a week,” Sanwo-Olu said during the ongoing media parley on economic hardship.

On the rising cost of food, he added that his administration would open more markets where Lagosians could buy food items at discounted rates.

“We will open Sunday markets in at least 42 identified markets across Lagos State. You will be able to buy food items at a discounted price. You will only be able to buy items worth up to N25,000,” the governor said.

He added that the 25% reduction in transport services for the state public transport system (BRT, train, ferry) will start this weekend.

The governor noted that his administration also discussed reducing fares with various transport unions.

“First is to express empathy with our citizens; we are not unmindful of the situation; as leaders, we must be able to solve socioeconomic problems,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He also challenged the private sector to look into what they can do for the citizens by replicating their role during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cash Withdrawal Limit: Again, FG Makes Fresh Announcement On For Public Accounts

The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) has said the federal government is planning to stop cash withdrawals from all federal, states and local government accounts.

The Director and Chief Executive Officer of NFIU, Modibbo Tukur, disclosed this in a statement signed by the unit’s chief media analyst, Ahmed Dikko.

Tukur said most cash withdrawals from government accounts — including payments for estacode — are often in excess of the cash withdrawal limit provided by the money laundering act.

According to the statement, due to the consistent devaluation of the naira and the introduction of a new naira policy, section one of the money laundering prohibition act is automatically activated”.

It further said this puts public servants at risk of imprisonment.

In addition, Tukur said the NFIU has already prepared recommendations to the secretary to the government of the federation; all governors; and local council chairs, directing all civil servants to open domiciliary and naira accounts prior to the commencement of the policy.

He however refuted reports that the NFIU will block federal government accounts in January 2023.

FG To Make Covid-19 Vaccination Mandatory For Civil Servants

Federal Government says it will soon make COVID vaccination mandatory for civil servants in the country.

BOSS MUSTAPHA, secretary to the government of the federation disclosed this at a meeting of state health commissioners’ forum in Abuja.

The SGF disclosed this, yesterday, at a meeting between the Federal Government and Commissioners of Health, in Abuja.

MUSTAPHA said government wants civil servants to be vaccinated, considering that they sometimes represent Nigeria abroad.

The Federal Government has concluded plans to make COVID-19 vaccination compulsory, beginning with public servants.

“The Federal Government shall, very shortly, unveil its decision on mandatory vaccination for every employee in its service,” said Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha.

The SGF disclosed this, yesterday, at a meeting between the Federal Government and Commissioners of Health, in Abuja.

He said: “The vaccine mandate obviously will come. Before now, the simple yellow fever vaccine, you could not travel the world without the card, until Nigeria was exited from the list of endemic countries. Therefore, the world is gravitating towards that direction. I can tell you that by the time the Western world vaccinates its people, you can’t get into any of the countries without the vaccine certificate. It has started happening in the European Union. They have created some waivers for people that have been vaccinated. It is better we begin to prepare people at home.”
