CBN: We Have Settled All Valid Forex Backlogs

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says all valid foreign exchange backlogs worth seven billion dollars have now been settled, fulfilling a key pledge of its governor, Olayemi Cardoso.

In a statement, the apex bank’s acting director of corporate communications, Hakama Sidi Ali, confirmed that independent auditors from Deloitte Consulting meticulously assessed these transactions, ensuring that only legitimate claims were honored.

She said the CBN recently concluded the payment of $1.5 billion to settle obligations to bank customers, effectively settling the residual balance of the FX backlog.

At a recent meeting, Governor Cardoso declared that the bank had made clearing the FX backlog a priority to restore credibility and confidence in the Nigerian economy.

The clearance of the FX transaction backlog is part of the overall strategy detailed in last month’s meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee to stabilize the exchange rate and thereby curb imported inflation.

CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso disclosed this in a recent visit to Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Abubakar Kyari in Abuja.

The move is in line with the apex bank’s drive to maintain price stability and address inflation.

He asserted that CBN will continue to work hand in hand with ministries, departments, and agencies that bear the mandate and expertise to undertake critical initiatives.

The Minister of Agriculture, Abubakar Kyari, expressed gratitude, noting that fertilizer constitutes the majority of the cost of inputs in any agricultural production.

I’m Not Responsible For Nigeria’s Economic Woes — Cardoso

Olayemi Cardoso, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), addressed concerns about the country's economic challenges during the first Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting held since he assumed office in September 2023.

Cardoso emphasized that he and his team are not to blame for the current economic difficulties faced by Nigerians. He asserted that the CBN is actively taking measures to restore the country's fiscal and monetary stability.

Responding to inquiries about the CBN's role in the economic downturn, Cardoso stated, "I laugh at that question, but it's not a laughing matter... We are not responsible for the woes that we have today; we are part of the solution." He stressed the importance of understanding the context in which the CBN operates and the need to address the crisis of confidence that existed when he assumed office.

Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Cardoso expressed his determination to implement necessary reforms to improve the situation. He highlighted the importance of restoring confidence in business operations, as it is crucial for economic progress.

During the MPC meeting, the committee decided to raise the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) by four hundred basis points to 22.75 percent from 18.75 percent. This adjustment is aimed at addressing the country's high inflation rate, currently at 29.90 percent.

Cardoso, who previously served as Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos State, assumed leadership of the apex bank following the suspension of Godwin Emefiele by President Bola Tinubu.

CBN Lacks The Power To Receive NNPCL Crude Sales – Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s directive to allow the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to control crude oil sales proceeds from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL).

He noted that the CBN lacks the sole responsibility to adhere to the directive.

President Tinubu had, on Monday, directed the CBN to assume responsibility for crude oil sales from NNPCL.

However, in a statement signed by Atiku, he described the directive as “illegal,” adding that it undermines the operational independence of the NNPCL.

Atiku suggested that the apex bank collaborate with the Nigeria Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI) to reflect transparency and accountability.

Late last month, the former VP asked President Tinubu to account for the NNPCL’s 3.3 billion dollar emergency crude repayment loan, which the corporation secured on August 16, 2023.
