Buhari Seeks NASS’ Approval For N819bn 2022 Supplementary Budget

President Muhammadu Buhari has transmitted a 2022 supplementary budget of 819 billion naira to the National Assembly.

In separate letters to the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, the president sought the lawmakers’ approval of the budget.

He said all of the additional budget for 2022 are capital expenditure and it became necessary due to the devastation caused by floods on farmlands and road infrastructure.

He explained that in the year 2022, Nigeria witnessed the worst flood incidents in recent history, which has caused massive destruction of farmlands with risks of food insecurity.

Reading the letter on the floor of the senate, Senate President Ahmed Lawan further informed the lawmakers that the supplementary budget will be financed “through additional domestic borrowings.

Reps Postpone Emefiele’s Appearance To Tuesday

The House of Representatives has postponed the appearance of the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, to next week.

The appearance was rescheduled after Emefiele notified the lawmakers that he travelled with President Muhammadu Buhari to Washington.

It would be recalled that Emefiele was asked to appear before the House to explain the new withdrawal limit policy.

His letter was read by Deputy Speaker, Idris Wase, who presided over Thursday’s session.

The lawmakers subsequently resolved that the CBN governor must appear on Tuesday to brief the entire House.

President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday met with the president of the United States, Joe Biden at the White house, on the sidelines of the US-Africa Leader’s Summit in Washington DC.

Speaking on the president’s visit, the Nigeria’s minister of foreign affairs Geoffrey Onyeama said both leaders discussed partnership ahead of the coming 2023 elections.

Earlier, Buhari met with the Secretary-General of the Abu Dhabi Forum, Al-Mahfoudh Bin Bayyah, and his deputy, Bob Roberts.

Buhari at the discussion said solving the problems affecting youths is the priority of the government as they are the country’s promise for a better future.

According to presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, Bin Bayyah said the visit was to invite President Buhari to attend an award conferment on him in recognition of his achievements in promoting peace and security.

President Buhari Says CBN Has His Backing To Redesign Naira Notes

President Muhammadu Buhari has said the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has his backing to redesign the naira notes.

According to the president, Nigeria has a lot to gain from the change in naira notes.

He added that he did not consider the period of three months as too short for the change of the notes.

President Buhari said, “People with illicit money buried under the soil will have a challenge with this but workers, businesses with legitimate incomes will face no difficulties at all,” end of quote.

Reacting to the controversy that has ensued since the announcement of the development by the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, a political economist and former presidential hopeful, Kingsley Moghalu said the CBN is an independent body.

The former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria said it is odd that the finance minister would say she was not aware of the move, considering that the ministry’s permanent secretary is on the CBN board.
