Economic Hardship: Lagos Slashes Public Transportation By 25%

Governor Babajide Sanwoolu has announced the reintroduction of a 25 percent slash in the cost of transportation on the state’s mass transit.

Speaking during a media chat at Lagos House Marina, Sanwoolu also said essential commodities, mainly food items, will be made available to vulnerable residents in the state.

The governor said the measures on transportation will take effect this week.

On the food intervention, Governor Sanwoolu said orders have been made directly from farms up north.

The governor also said junior public servants in the state will only have to go to the office three times a week starting next week.

Lagos State Governor Sanwo-Olu Cuts BRT Fares By 25% After Public Outcry

In Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has slashed regulated bus and train fares in the state by 25 per cent, effective today, Tuesday, November 7, 2023.

The spokesperson of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Kolawole Ojelabi, made this known in a statement.

According to him, the governor’s directive followed calls for reinstating the 50 per cent rebate on fares for regulated bus and rail transport until another review is announced.

The Governor had, on August 2, 2023, announced a 50 per cent discount in fare on regulated transport bus and rail transport, which ended on Sunday.

Lagos Cancels 50% Discount On BRT Fare

The State Government has cancelled the 50% transport fare reduction on all Public Transport Systems that was implemented in response to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directive in a bid to cushion the effects of subsidy removal on Lagosians.

The Governor had on July 31 announced the fare reduction, noting that it would affect all state-owned buses by 50% and commercial yellow buses by 25%.

In a public notice, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) announced a reversion to the old rates of public transport.

The statement informed commuters that starting today, Monday, November 6, 2023, transport fares will return to the pre-2nd August 2023 rate.

It also advised Lagos residents to take note of the change and get prepared to pay regular transport fare rates before the reduction was announced in July and took effect in August.

BRT Driver Denies Involvement In Bamise’s Death

The driver of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle which was boarded by the late 22-year-old fashion designer, Oluwabamise Ayanwola has said they were attacked by gunmen during the trip.

BAMISE went missing after she boarded a BRT vehicle from Chevron bus-stop, Ajah, to Oshodi around 7pm on February 26th.

The police said Bamise’s corpse was later found on Carter bridge at Ogogoro community, Lagos Island.

Nice was also said to have been arrested by officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Ogun state.

Speaking with TVC when he was paraded by the police, the driver claimed that three men bearing arms boarded the BRT bus alongside Bamise during the trip.

The driver said the three gunmen ordered him to stop at Carter bridge, after which they dragged Bamise out of the bus.
