No Ransom Demand On Abducted Borno Women, Nine Returned – SEMA

Nine out of the 102 internally displaced persons reportedly abducted while fetching firewood in the bush last Sunday in Gamboru-Ngala, Borno State, have returned home.

While the United Nations had condemned the abduction, putting the figure at 200, the Borno State government dismissed the abduction narrative, arguing that they only lost their way back home from the forest.

The Director-General, Borno State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Barkindo Saidu, said if they were abducted, the abductors would have called for ransom, but that’s not the case.

He told the Punch that nine out of the'missing’ IDPs traced their way back to the camp last Friday.

Saidu said the state government has been careful about quoting any number because the authorities do not believe the IDPs, as they can be economical with the truth.

Boko Haram Kills 12, Abducts One In Borno

Suspected Boko Haram terrorists in military uniform have killed 12 people and abducted one in Gatamarwa and Tsiha communities in the Chibok Local Government Area of Borno State.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Daso Kenneth, who confirmed the attack, said the gunmen shot sporadically at the people in the two communities.

He said the Police Commissioner and other security heads had ordered a discreet investigation to bring the perpetrators to book.

The terrorists were reported to have stormed the community of Gatamarwa around 5 p.m. on New Year’s Day.

According to sources, the gunmen stormed the communities in large numbers, were heavily armed with AK-47 rifles, motorcycles, and Hilux vans, and opened fire on mourners returning from Gatamarwa.

They later attacked the Tsiha community near Shikarkir, killed three people, and abducted a young lady. They burnt houses after looting their foodstuffs.

NYSC Orientation Camp Resumes In Borno After 13 Years

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has marked a momentous occasion by launching an orientation camp in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

This marks the revival of the camp after a lengthy 13-year absence, stemming from its closure in 2011 due to the escalating Boko Haram insurgency.

With the inauguration of Batch ‘B’ Stream 2 corps members, the Maiduguri orientation site came to life once more. NYSC State Coordinator, Mohammed Adamu, took a moment to extend appreciation to Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum for his instrumental role in reinstating the orientation program in the state.

Under the vigilant watch of the military, police, civil defensedefence, and civilian joint task force personnel, the corps members have found a temporary abode at the Arabic Teachers College, a provisional orientation venue.

Six hundred twenty-nine males and 496 females constitute the current corps members training in this revitalised setting.

Governor Zulum shared his joy regarding re-establishing the orientation camp in the state. He conveyed that this symbolic move underscores the gradual restoration of peace and security to the region after enduring years of insurgency.

In a visionary stride, Governor Zulum has directed NYSC officials to actively identify graduates specialising in science, medical, and para-medical fields, potentially paving the way for their future employment opportunities within the state government's workforce.

Former Borno Governor Backs Out From A Chairmanship Race

Ali-Modu Sheriff, a former two-term governor of Borno State and a national chairmanship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has withdrawn from the race.

Mr Sheriff, who spoke at a news conference on Sunday in Abuja, said he withdrew from the race to respect the party and President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to zone the position to the North-central.

He added that he decided to withdraw from the race as a party man who respects the rule of law and the leaders of the party.

“I am sure that most of you have been following the trends of activities of our party, the APC within the last 10 days or so.

“The party has taken a position that the position of its national chairman should go to the North Central, meaning it is exclusively zoned to contestants of the zone.

“The President is the leader of the party and he has taken a position. I have always told you that I will contest if the position is zoned to my zone.

“That has been my statement always, and today they have taken a position. I respect the president as a person and as a president, he is my leader, therefore, I do not want to oppose him in any way or form,” Mr Sheriff said.

The former Borno governor added that the president and the party’s leaders must have a reason for allowing the zoning of its chairmanship to the North-central.

“I have led a party: the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), I am a founding father of this party. I was the Chairman of Board of Trustees (BOT) of the All Nigerian People Party (ANPP),” he said.
