Djokovic Makes Winning Return In First Match Since Australian Open Vaccination Saga

Novak Djokovic says he had the “best possible experience” in returning with a win at the Dubai Tennis Championships in his first match since being involved in a vaccination and visa saga in the build-up to the Australian Open.

The world number one became the focus of a global story when he was deported from Australia on 16 January because of his Covid-19 vaccination status.

But on his return to action he saw off Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti 6-3 6-3.

“A pleasant experience,” he said.

After thanking the crowd following his first match of 2022, Djokovic added: “I couldn’t pick a better place to kick start the season – it was the best possible experience tonight. “All in all, it’s a straight-set win so of course I have to be satisfied, especially after not playing for two and a half, almost three months.”

Number one seed Djokovic saved all seven break points he served against Musetti – the world number 58 – and will face either Russia’s Karen Khachanov or Australia’s Alex de Minaur in round two.

Mertens, Sabalenka Win Australian Open Doubles Title

Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka eased past Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova to clinch their maiden Australian Open double trophy on Friday.

The Belgian-Belarusian pair proved too formidable for the third-seeded Czech pair, winning 6-2, 6-3 on Rod Laver Arena after sealing the victory on their fourth championship point.

The victory at the tournament is their second Grand Slam triumph as a team after the 2019 US Open and sixth title overall as they both bounced back from fourth-round defeats in singles at Melbourne Park.

The duad made their debut together at 2019 Australian Open and have since established themselves as one of the tour’s top teams, along with two-time Grand Slam winners Krejcikova and Siniakova.

Osaka Beats Williams To Reach Australian Open Final

Naomi Osaka claimed an impressive victory over Serena Williams to reach the Australian Open final and end the American's latest quest for a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam title.

Three-time Slam champion Osaka withstood early pressure from Williams to win 6-3 6-4.

Osaka is on a 20-match unbeaten streak and has never lost a Slam final.

The Japanese will face either America's Jennifer Brady or Czech Karolina Muchova in Saturday's final.

"I was really nervous and scared in the beginning and then I sort of eased my way into it," Osaka said.

"It's just always an honour to play her and I just didn't want to go out really dud. I just wanted to try my best."

It is the first time Williams has lost a semi-final at the Australian Open in eight appearances in the last four.

Williams will be left to rue the opportunities she let slip and once again wonder whether she will equal Margaret Court's major record.

World Number One Barty Stunned By Muchova In Australian Open Quarter-Finals

Karolina Muchova fought back to stun world number one Ashleigh Barty at the Australian Open and reach her maiden Grand Slam semi-final.

The Czech 25th seed struggled with dizziness in the Melbourne Park heat but refocused after a medical time-out to beat the home favourite 1-6 6-3 6-2.

Barty led by a set and a break but was unable to stop Muchova's comeback.

Muchova will play American Jennifer Brady, who beat compatriot Jessica Pegula, for a place in the final.

"It was very tough and I was a bit lost on the court and my head was spinning so I took a break," the Muchova said.

"It helped me. I tried to get back, played a bit faster rallies so we don't play the long ones as in the first set and it worked well."

US Open semi-finalist Brady beat Pegula 4-6 6-2 6-1.
