Atletico Madrid To Close Part Of Stadium For Man City Clash

Atletico Madrid must close part of their stadium for Wednesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Manchester City, Uefa has ruled.

The Spanish champions must close off at least 5,000 seats at the 68,456-capacity Wanda Metropolitano.

Uefa's punishment is for the "discriminatory behavior" of Atletico fans during last week's first-leg match in Manchester, where City 1-0.

Atletico will also have to display a Uefa banner reading "#NoToRacism".

Meanwhile, Uefa has provisionally suspended Roma goalkeeper coach Nuno Santos and Bodo/Glimt manager Kjetil Knutsen while they investigate an alleged altercation between the two in the aftermath of last Thursday's Europa Conference League game.

Bodo/Glimt claimed a 2-1 victory over Jose Mourinho's Roma side in the first leg of the quarter-final.

The Norwegian club released a statement which stated they had video evidence of head coach Knutsen being attacked by members of Roma's support staff, including Santos.

In response to Uefa's decision to suspend Knutsen, Bodo/Glimt released a statement saying: "We are surprised and shocked by Uefa's decision. We will appeal, and will work on it throughout the evening. Beyond that, we currently have no comments."

Manchester City Record Narrow UCL Quarter-Final First Leg Win Over Athletico Madrid

Manchester City were made to work hard to earn a slender 1-0 win in their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Atletico Madrid.

Both teams had never met before in the continental competition prior, although the head coaches and plenty of the players will be familiar with each other.

City defeated Sporting in the last round to book a clash with Atletico, who knocked out their opposition's local rivals Manchester United, and the Spanish champions were resolute in their defensive setup throughout in a frustrating evening at the Etihad.

Pep Guardiola recalled John Stones in a back four that saw Nathan Ake at left-back, while Phil Foden was benched in place of Ilkay Gundogan. Much of the build-up centred around the contrasting styles between Guardiola and Atletico boss Diego Simeone, but the City manager says this tie is about the players.

Atletico were stubborn from the start, restricting City to few openings and frustrating the Blues who dominated throughout without getting a clear sight of goal. That was until Phil Foden's introduction on 70 minutes, with his first touch being to free Kevin De Bruyne to finish past Jan Oblak.

Kevin De Bruyne was the difference between the two sides. City had 67 percent possession over the game and were completely dominant for the 90 minutes, but troubled Simeone's men on just a few occasions. Atletico will be happy with the result With the second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano to come.

The goal was enough to give City a 1-0 lead heading into the second leg next week.

Manchester United Dumped Out Of UCL By Athletico Madrid

Manchester United were eliminated from the Champions League after succumbing to a 1-0 home defeat to Atletico Madrid which saw them beaten 2-1 on aggregate.

Renan Lodi's first-half header was adequate to take Diego Simeone's side into the quarter-finals as Ralf Rangnick's team endured a frustrating evening at Old Trafford.

Anthony Elanga had appeared to be fouled in the build-up to the goal but United lacked any form of intent at the other end that was required to break down a typical Atletico defensive stronghold.

The home team were the more entertaining side for much of the first half as they tried to press Atletico with relative success, rushing the Spanish side to the delight of the crowd.

Raphael Varane's tackle on Joao Felix was cheered, Fred's flicks and tricks brought roars, while Cristiano Ronaldo was winning tackles by the touchline, dribbling down the wing.

There were brief moments which seemed like solace was intended for United, hints that Atletico might fold under the pressure. Elanga spurned a wonderful chance from close range. Bruno Fernandes wanted a penalty,  Nothing was given and nothing decisive was to come from the beleaguered English side.

The defeat means United's slim hopes of ending their long trophy drought this season have come to an abrupt end after already getting ousted from the FA Cup and EFL cup.
