EFCC To Arraign Obiano Over Alleged ₦4bn Fraud Wednesday

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to prosecute the former governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, on Wednesday, January 24, before Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja. The charges against Obiano involve alleged money laundering, totaling N4,008,573,350, and he will face nine counts in the upcoming trial.

The decision to prosecute the ex-governor follows EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede's commitment to reviewing high-profile cases, particularly those involving former governors and ministers. An authoritative source disclosed that Obiano is accused of transferring N4,008,573,350 from security votes into various accounts, converting the money into dollars at different times, and receiving it back in cash.

EFCC's lead counsel, Slyvanus Tahir, SAN, will lead a team of eight lawyers in prosecuting the case against the former governor. Among the charges, Obiano is accused of indirectly transferring funds from the Anambra State Government Security Vote Account into accounts belonging to entities with no business relationship with the state government. The funds were allegedly dissipated for purposes unrelated to the security affairs of Anambra State.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed the impending arraignment and stated that Obiano would face money laundering and corruption charges. Obiano's legal troubles began with his arrest at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos, on March 17, 2022, as he attempted to board a flight to the United States.

The arrest occurred shortly after he left office as governor, losing his immunity from arrest and prosecution. Obiano had been under EFCC scrutiny for alleged misappropriation of public funds, including N5 billion from Sure-P and N37 billion from the security vote, withdrawn in cash. Some of the funds were purportedly diverted to support political activities in the state, according to EFCC statements at the time of his arrest.

Tragic Lightning Strike Claims Lives Of Three Students In Anambra

A heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra as lightning struck a group of Senior Secondary School students on a football field. The incident occurred on a Saturday, leaving three lives lost.

According to an eyewitness, the lightning targeted nine male students who were playing football barefoot with their peers. They had been training for an upcoming tournament when the sudden lightning, accompanied by thunderstorms, struck the area, leaving the boys in distress.

The school's coach had already concluded the training session, and the rain began shortly after. However, some students decided to continue playing, which unfortunately led to the tragic event. A teacher, hearing the students' screams and seeing them in distress, raised the alarm, prompting people to rush to their aid.

The boys were swiftly taken to the school clinic and later transferred to a hospital in Awka. While six of the students were successfully resuscitated and are currently receiving medical attention, three of them, tragically, did not survive. Their parents have been notified.

Mrs Hope Egwu, a resident, revealed that the news of the accident left the community in shock and disbelief. At the hospital in Awka, concerned parents and sympathisers gathered around the survivors, hoping for their recovery.

A doctor at the hospital confirmed that three of the nine boys had arrived at the hospital deceased, while the others were revived. Notably, it was emphasised that wearing proper footwear could have potentially minimised the impact of the lightning.

The incident has not been reported to the police, according to the Anambra State Police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga. Consultant Pathologist Prof. Chukwudi Okani explained that the tragedy was a natural disaster, and he advised the installation of thunder arrestors in buildings to mitigate the risk of lightning strikes.

PEPT Judgment: Atiku, Obi Head To Supreme Court

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has rejected the judgment of the Presidential Election Petitions Court on the February 25, 2023 poll, describing it as against justice.

Obi, who spoke in Onitsha, Anambra State, acknowledged the Tribunal’s adherence to statutory time frame and expressed respect for the court’s views and rulings but disagreed with the judgment’s rationale and final conclusions.

He announced his intention, in his capacity as a presidential candidate and on behalf of the Labour Party, to immediately challenge the judgment through the appellate process, as permitted by the Constitution.

Highlighting the fact that the Tribunal is not the ultimate authority in the matter, Obi emphasized that the responsibility now rests with the Supreme Court, which he expressed confidence in.

He urged Nigerians to maintain their focus, steadfastness, and commitment to peaceful processes while emphasizing the importance of adhering to the rule of law.
